Presentation transcript:

Electromagnetic Spectrum Different type of light on a spectrum (longest to shortest): 1.Radio waves 2.Microwaves 3.Infra-red (IR) 4.Visible light 5.Ultraviolet (UV) 6.X-rays 7.Gamma rays Provide an example of each

Electromagnetic Spectrum Wavelength – distance from peak to peak in each wave Frequency – how many waves per second Light is energy emitted by movement of electrons

Electromagnetic Spectrum Long wavelength, low frequency = not dangerous – Low energy – Does not change chemical reactions Short wavelength, high frequency = very dangerous – High energy – Can change chemical reactions (Ex: cause cancer)

Spectrum Importance (Visible) Visible light – Seeable by the human eye – From 380 to 750 nm – Absorbed colors: unseen – Reflected colors: seen – Black and white are not colors Black = absence of all colors; absorbs all colors White = presence of all colors; reflects all colors – Plants use this for photosynthesis

Spectrum Importance (UV) UV light – Light from the sun – We cannot see it but Insects can Important for survival – Plants: photosynthesis + pollination – Animals: mating + vitamin D

Bioluminescence An organism’s ability to produce and emit light Think of examples! Why would this be used? Uses: Communication, camouflage, mating, defense, and hunting for prey GFP gene is transplanted into other animals
