The University – some facts The University of Liverpool was one of the first civic universities. Founded in 1881 with the establishment of University College Liverpool, the College opened in 1882 with 45 students on Brownlow Hill. Today, the University has over 230 first-degree courses offered across 103 subjects, over 19,000 registered students and an annual income of £219 million, which includes £75 million for research. We comprise six faculties, 46 departments and schools and provide 306 first-degree courses.

The University – some facts Valuable international market - 2,056 International Students, from 112 countries Partnerships - Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) is a new international university established in partnership between Xi’an Jiaotong University and the University of Liverpool. It is the first and only university of its kind approved by the Ministry of Education. The University offers undergraduate degrees in the fields of science, engineering and management

Services 24 hour opening – term time. Access/borrowing rights extended to all NHS staff. Walk in access to our e-resources - the service is only available when the Ground Floor ISD is open and is managed by the member of ISD staff on duty. CSD have moved EZproxy to new hardware and upgraded the EZproxy software to a new version. One major benefit of this upgrade is that EZproxy no longer conflicts with firewalls (in particular NHSnet).

Services Metalib - a new way of accessing our e-resources which enables users to cross-search several different resources at the same time and also makes it easier to identify relevant electronic resources for specific subjects. Users can now use mobiles and other handheld devices to search the library catalogue using AirPAC. Facebook application created for the Library catalogue and Facebook – users can add the application to their Facebook profile allowing them to search both the library catalogue and our core collections of ejournals and databases in MetaLib from within their Facebook profile.

E-journals - Elsevier We have now purchased almost all of the remaining Elsevier e-journal backfiles on the ScienceDirect platform. This gives us access to the full backfiles of more than 1,400 e-journals on ScienceDirect. Among the backfile collections we now have are: Agricultural and Biological Sciences Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology Immunology and Microbiology Medicine and Dentistry Neuroscience Nursing and Health Professions Pharmacology, Toxicology and Pharmaceutics The only main ScienceDirect backfile that we do not own is The Lancet.

More e-journals SAGE Publications' e-journal backfiles. This gives us online access to over 300 SAGE journals back to their first volume. All Cambridge University press journals online. Nature Publishing Group's first-ever NESLi2 agreement at the Platinum level, giving us online access to all NPG journals in 2007: both the Nature-branded journals and the journals that NPG publish on behalf of societies. Online-only subscriptions to all journals currently published by: Mary-Ann Liebert, IOS Press, Guilford Publications. Access to all Blackwell Publishing e-journal backfiles. We now have access to the full backfiles of more than 200 e-journals on and will be granted access to the backfiles of the remaining titles as the digitisation process is completed by the publisher and the titles are released on Synergy.

Developments The Sydney Jones Library refurbishment – major project throughout 2007 – is now nearing completion. The new Abercromby Wing (created from the former Senate House) now houses many of the Library's services (issuing; reference collection; short loan; photocopiers, etc.) and the 'old' Sydney Jones Library is now the Grove Wing of the new Sydney Jones Library. Most of the Library's books and periodicals, and the Special Collections and Archives, remain in the Grove Wing. The next stage of the Sydney Jones Library Project sees the refurbishment of the Grove Wing.

Developments The University is creating an Institutional Repository, the main purpose of which will be to provide open access to work produced by our researchers. This is expected to be advantageous to the researcher, whose work is more likely to be cited; to the department, whose RAE performance is enhanced by increased citation; and to the University overall by increasing its visibility. Redevelopment of the Harold Cohen Library (Summer 2008) - a £600k scheme to improve the reading rooms on the upper floor with the South Reading Room being turned into a medical subject area, with easy access to the library team supporting medical students, which will be in adjoining offices visible from the reading room.
