How To Choose Your First Credit Card

Do you have a credit card?

According to a new study by credit card.com, 36% of young adults between the ages 19 and 29 do not have credit cards.

How will you choose when you finally decide to get one?

1.Make sure it benefits your credit - building credit is one of the main reasons people get credit cards. If your credit card issuer does not report your use and payments to the credit bureaus, then it will not help you build credit. If your credit card is issued by a major bank, and is a Visa, Mastercard, or American express it is not likely that you will have this problem.

2. Skip the annual fee – You don’t want to be charged in order to build your credit. Your first credit card is the credit card you will likely have for most of your life, so the annual fee can add up. Check that your card has no annual fee.

3. Pay your bill – Although your interest rate should be low, if you are thinking too much about it when getting your first card it means you plan on carrying a balance. Use your card responsibly, and don’t carry a balance unless it is necessary.
