BIM October-2014Dr. Walid Al-Awad 1 Building Information Modelling

What is BIM? We define Building Information Modeling as the process of generating and managing an intelligent/three-dimensional building information database during its life cycle. The process produces a 3D Building Information Model. October-2014Dr. Walid Al-Awad 2

BIM Understanding What Building Means What do you think of when you hear the word building? You may think of a physical building like an office, school, stadium, hospital, or house. In that case, BIM refers: -information modeling for a single building, -including all of the geometry -data for architectural -structural design, -and electrical engineering, and so on. October-2014Dr. Walid Al-Awad 3

BIM building can mean a lot more than just that - you can see that Building Information Modeling is a process. - final product. - meaning the same as construction or the process of putting things together In fact, one of the best ways to describe a building involves describing things October-2014Dr. Walid Al-Awad 4

BIM the act of building things, such as the following: - Bridges - Railways - Highways - Utilities October-2014Dr. Walid Al-Awad 5

BIM BIM has been successfully demonstrated in: -Architecture and building design -Civil and structural engineering -Energy and utilities -Highway and road engineering -Landscape and land surveying -Offshore and marine architecture -Rail and metro transport engineering October-2014Dr. Walid Al-Awad 6

BIM - Services and engineering - Tunneling and subway architecture - Urban master-planning and smart city design It demonstrates that building is a process. The majority of model inputs are going to be in the design and construction phases, and the majority of information outputs will be extracted during handover, use, and asset maintenance. October-2014Dr. Walid Al-Awad 7

BIM What does BIM do for building? - Making design easier - Making coordination simpler - Ensuring construction is safer - Clash detection in design - Multiple design options October-2014Dr. Walid Al-Awad 8

BIM concept Building information modeling is a process that fundamentally changes the role of computation in the Engineering world. In this concept, rather than using a computer to assist producing a series of drawings that together describe a building, the computer is used to create a single, unified representation of the entire building so content comprehensive that it can generate all necessary construction documentations. October-2014Dr. Walid Al-Awad 9

BIM & CAD BIM models are not the same ones used in traditional CAD (points, lines, curves). To create a BIM, a modeler uses intelligent objects to build the model. The BIM application models with virtual building components that hold attributed information about actual elements and systems. Examples include trusses, columns, beams, walls, doors, windows, ceilings, and floors. October-2014Dr. Walid Al-Awad 10

BIM & CAD As a general concept modeling type, BIM deals with higher-level operations than traditional CAD does. It deals with placing and modifying entire objects rather than placing drawings and modifying sets of lines and points. Within the model, walls and floors are modeled not as a series of 3D solids but as virtual walls and floors with material types and properties. October-2014Dr. Walid Al-Awad 11

BIM & CAD October-2014Dr. Walid Al-Awad 12 Phases I and II in these Figure cover the introduction to basics of BIM. In phase III, a specific platform is chosen, and students learn more in depth about object- oriented modeling techniques.
