Oil recovery solutions since 1967 Bulkhead Boom System What is it? The Bulkhead boom is a high integrity, easy to deploy boom. The Boom complies with OPA90* and with ASTM*. It has unequalled wave following characteristics and thereby out performs other booms of larger size. Up to 450m of bulkhead boom can be supplied on our range of hydraulically driven boom reels. Also available are reels, power packs weather covers and other ancillaries. * OPA 90 - Oil pollution Act of 1990 * ASTM - American Society for Testing and Materials
Oil recovery solutions since 1967 Where is it used? The Bulkhead Boom Systems are designed for the full range of environments from terminals to offshore and open water. Vikoma offers the system in four categories: Terminal, Coastal, Offshore and Ocean with freeboard and draft determining the categories. Terminals Coastal areas Offshore deepwater areas Shoreline operations Rivers, lakes and inland waters Successfully employed with: Emergency response organisations, Coast Guards, Port Authorities Bulkhead Boom System
Oil recovery solutions since 1967 How does is it work? Each section of the boom is inflated during deployment with the Vikoma Air Inflator pack. Each section is inflated to 0.02Bar. INFLATIONDEFLATION Bulkhead Boom System
Oil recovery solutions since 1967 Connectors Vikoma’s patented Unicon™ connectors fitted as standard provide a simple quick fit connection system. Unicon™ quick release connectors are extruded from marine grade aluminium and are highly resistant to corrosion. ASTM connectors can be supplied upon request The method of connecting the boom material to the plate does not compromise the material increasing the overall maximum tensile strength. Oil recovery solutions since 1967 Design The boom is designed with internal bulkheads positioned every 3-5 meters. All loads are transferred through the entire boom section. Manufacturing process includes vulcanisation (pressure and heat) of all joints guaranteeing boom integrity. Joints designed to eliminate failure by ‘peel’. All exposed neoprene edges are capped to prevent wicking. Enclosed galvanised ballast chain to maintain the continuous profile of the boom and reduces any possibility of the chain snagging or damage associated with an exposed chain. Unequalled reserve buoyancy to weight ratios. Low inflation pressure of just 0.3 psig (0.02bar). Bulkhead boom has the world’s best wave following characteristics out performing much larger booms. Oil recovery solutions since 1967 Operation The boom is inflated and deflated via high capacity spring loaded valves located in each buoyancy chamber. The boom can be towed into position by a second vessel ready for oil recovery. Bulkhead Boom System

Oil recovery solutions since 1967 Portable inflator The portable air inflator is designed for efficient inflation. The petrol driven unit is highly portable and is supplied with a shoulder strap, which makes it easy to use by one person. Each inflator is supplied with five meters of hose. Bulkhead Boom System
Oil recovery solutions since 1967 What are the key features and benefits of this system? The boom is made from vulcanised, reinforced, double faced neoprene thus ensuring an outstanding, all weather, flexible, high integrity boom. The Bulkhead buoyancy tube has internal bulkheads every 3-5 metres to form independent chambers. These are completely sealed and in the event of damage to any one chamber, the boom's integrity and ability to contain oil are retained. With a low man-power requirement, fully enclosed ballast chain pocket and a low working pressure the Bulkhead boom is an exceptionally safe boom to deploy. Bulkhead Boom System
Oil recovery solutions since 1967 What are the key features and benefits of this system? The boom's continuous cylindrical shape, coupled with low air inflation pressure enhances flexibility and produces a very responsive containment system. The smooth continuous boom profile inhibits the formation of vortices, thereby discouraging oil loss under the boom. The high buoyancy to weight ratio gives unequalled wave following capability. All Bulkhead boom seams are vulcanised to ensure good retention of the neoprene's excellent mechanical properties, even after prolonged storage, and also to give resistance to degradation from exposure to hydrocarbons and UV light. The interface between the boom material and the marine grade aluminium connecting plate is achieved without puncturing the material. This ensures boom integrity. Bulkhead Boom System
