New Media Education Project Update Stuart Caulfield – Project Officer

New Media Education Project Aim: To develop training packages for young people with LD and carers to develop skills in the safe and productive use of the Internet and Social Media. Partnership work with these groups to create learning materials.

Update – Where Are We Now? 1.Development of training for young people, parents & carers. 2.An interactive solution to compliment training – an Internet safety game based learning system. 3.Current areas of development including future qualifications & easy read.

1. Training Training units have been developed across a number of pilot sites. Pilot sites have come on board with needs of their own – young persons/adults/parents & carers groups with an interest in Internet safety. Broad range of requirements, issues with online safety or lack of knowledge in this area (very different between groups).

Key areas People with LD, parents & carers have identified a number of areas of concern related to online safety. These areas are now all units of training developed for the New Media Education Project.

Friendships Money & Shopping Chat & Communication Security Meeting in Real Life Taking Photos/Video Personal Information Smartphone Safety Cyberbulling Online Gaming Ten Training Units

Pilot Sites 8+ pilot sites onboard rolling out training. LAC Midlothian - involvement in DHI/UWS gaming labs, completed training units with participants and have offered specific materials on a one to one basis, awaiting feedback on using training in this format. LAC Edinburgh - completed full run through of training, involvement in DHI/UWS gaming labs - compiling feedback/report on materials & use.

Pilot Sites – More Examples PASDA Carers – two training session for cares completed with interest for further – carers interested in ‘hands on’ sessions – setting up security settings etc. Fisherrow Centre Musselburgh – have made use of training with several groups, feedback received, potential for work with Borders College certification (Borders college certified assessors working at the centre)

2. Game Based Learning System ‘Game Jam’ Collaboration with Digital Health Institute (DHI), University of the West of Scotland (UWS), LAC teams in Midlothian, Edinburgh & participants with LD. We have now completed 3 full day ‘experience labs’ with attendance of 20+ individuals with LD & LAC from Midlothian & Edinburgh. Another of these labs is planned for 22 nd September in Midlothian brining participants from first labs back together.

Digital Health Institute DHI team are now compiling a report and analysing findings from the 3 labs. The report will be part of the data used to show current progress & collaboration with people with LD. This involves fuller development of usable solution (completed Internet safety game for people with LD).

UWS - Game Prototype Development UWS are developing working prototype of the game based on requirements gathered in the first 3 labs. This working demo will be for participants at a final lab session due to take place 22 nd Sept Original participants will be invited to see how development has taken place and continue to collaborate on nature of solution.

3. Qualifications Borders College are looking into certificating using SCQF level 2 qualification. I am currently developing a ‘unit specification’ to use for this, materials used at college could then form an assessable unit. Potential to expand this to other colleges/certificate outside college should this be successful.

3. Easy Read Easy Read version of materials is being developed. Capability Scotland based in West Lothian will collaborate to develop an easy read version of the materials currently available on Moodle. A first draft version of this due to be ready to share and further develop in next couple of months.
