Short Status Summary on the PANDA (-Prototype) GEM-TPC

B. Voss 2 GEM-TPC Prototype (FOPI/CB-ELSA) Collaboration September 8th 2009 GEM-TPC Meeting Agenda Von: Gesendet: Montag, 7. September :32 An: Paola Gianotti Cc: GEM-TPC-UserList Betreff: [Gem-tpc] Central tracker sub-group meeting Dear Paola, sorry for my late reply. I am rather busy with COMPASS at the moment... There will be three presentations in the TPC part of the CT meeting, each of them about 30': 1. Status of GEM-TPC prototype (B. Voss) 2. Test of TPC at ELSA with sparse readout (M. Vandenbroucke) 3. First results on tracking from Bonn (A. Winnebeck) To start after the coffee break is fine. Since I have duties at CERN at present, I am not able to come to Juelich next week. Would you mind to chair the TPC meeting as well? I also suggested to Ulrich that there should be a common report on the CT subgroup meeting in the plenary session on Friday. If you would be willing to do this, I would be very grateful. Of course we will provide you with the slides. Best regards, Bernhard

Voss 8 GEM-TPC Prototype (FOPI/CB-ELSA) Collaboration September 8th 2009 Front-End ElectronicXYTER based ‘Hot spots’ on the FEB / chips identified at the Token ring (70°C surface temperature) redesign attacked Engineering run for ASICS launched (1000 n-XYTER chips, 100k€) Second badge of PCB boards still awaiting part mounting & commissioning FEB+DAQ Revision of the 1,2,..4-chip boards + test environment ready to use Work on GEM-TPC boards (2 chips) started

B. Voss 9 GEM-TPC Prototype (FOPI/CB-ELSA) Collaboration September 8th 2009 cooling structure without FEBs Cooling systemGeometry & Design Total heat loss ~320 Watt  Active cooling of front-end-electronic Energy transport (passive) by heat conduction to active cooling with cooling fluid in structure Chips  FEB Backing  Alu Ring  Coulant Cool both ends of FEBs Aluminium structures as mounting of FEB Plexiglas structures with helix for cooling liquid Overpressure system ~ 5 bar pressure available ~ 0,5 bar loss for »cooling pot«  4,5 bar loss for supply & drain line (60m) Size limited by beam pipe & experiment cooling structure with FEBs ‚Media Bridge‘

B. Voss 10 GEM-TPC Prototype (FOPI/CB-ELSA) Collaboration September 8th 2009 Cooling systemGeometry & Design Challenges: Overpressure system (max. 5 bar) Shape stability & tightness Possible improvements: ‘Key and slot’ geometry Integrate into the pots (wire-cut) (  no sealing needed at this place) Various designs of media bridge under investigation Cooling channels Media Bridge (half cut)

B. Voss 11 GEM-TPC Prototype (FOPI/CB-ELSA) Collaboration September 8th 2009 Cooling system Assembly Problems: Helix channels not tight Sealing of pots not tight Media bridge can't take pressure Low tolerances  mounting difficult Solutions: Added sealing between helix channels Sealing of cooling pots with flexible adhesive joint (glue) ‘BetaPrime’ based bonding Works fine (is tight)
