CD theory, principles and practices 4 CD is not community services. It is not direct service provision. CD is action based. Bringing communities together to change and resolve issues in their communities Community development worker’s role is to support community groups. Not make decisions for them. What are some examples of CD projects?

CD theory, principles and practices 5 CD has been influenced by different theories, principles and perspectives e.g Marxism, Humanism, Human Rights etc We will come back to this later Key Principles of CD Empowerment Social Justice Respecting local knowledge and skills Human Rights

Activity Read the outline of the principles on page 7-9 In groups provide examples of how as a community development worker you would ensure these principles were followed in the work you did. 6

Next week Choose a theory of community development. Research the theory you have chosen. You are to present a 5-10mins presentation to the class next session on that theory.
