Underground Railroad A-Z People, Places, and Perspectives

By: Jennifer, Jordan, Brooklyn, Gillian, & Jaren This slide show is about slavery, the Underground Railroad, and very important people [Like Harriet Tubman!]

A Abolitionists An abolitionist is a person who didn’t want slavery. Some people who were abolitionists are: Abraham Lincoln, Harriet Tubman, and others who helped in the underground railroad.

B Henry “Box” Brown Henry “box” Brown was a slave who escaped in a box. Henry was born a slave in When he was 15 he was sold to a plantation owner. A little while later he mailed himself to Philadelphia in a box. It took about 2 days.

C Civil War The civil war was the war against the south and the north of the U.S. It started because the north was against slavery and the south was not. Then they decided that who ever won got their way and as you can tell the north won.

D Drinking Gourd The song follow the drinking gourd was one of the songs the slaves used to get to freedom. The slaves used songs because they could not read or write letters, draw maps, or read instructions. The drinking gourd symbolizes the big dipper that points to the north star and freedom.

E Emancipation Proclamation The Emancipation Proclamation was the proclamation written by Abraham Lincoln to free slaves in the south. But it did not work. It was written January

F Fugitive Slave Acts The Fugitive Slave Act began in But, there was another Fugitive Slave Act in There was many brutal years for the black people. The Fugitive Slave Act was a law that was spread across the states. If you help slaves escape, you will be punished, it is illegal. What is not illegal is that rich people can sell, keep, or kill their slaves.

G William Garrison William Garrison is the owner of a newspaper company and he wrote about the Fugitive Slave Act. His newspapers were called The Liberator.

H Harriet Tubman Harriet Tubman was a slave who escaped from her owner. Then, she joined a secret organization called the Underground Railroad. The Underground Railroad is a group that helps slaves that escaped.

I Illiterate The slaves who were owned were not smart. Their masters would not let them learn anything!! If they were smart, they would make plans how to escape and then tell other people.

J Jeopardy The slaves who tried to escape, were in jeopardy. They could have been caught! The slaves who have been caught, they were severely punished.

K Kindness Many people felt that slavery was wrong. Some people that lived in the, North helped slaves get to Canada for freedom.

L Land Owners People had farms and they grew cotton. But their cotton field grew a lot of cotton and they needed help. So people bought slaves to help with planting and growing the cotton.

M Mason-Dixon Line The Mason-Dixon Line separates the Slave States from the Non-slave States

N North Star The run away slaves would follow the North Star. The North Star led the slaves to freedom.

O Ownership The slave owners would buy the slaves and would punish them cruelly. Examples: 1.They could buy and sell slaves 2.If the owners caught the slaves misbehaving or running away they could hang them, whip them, or sell them

P Punishment If the slaves got caught escaping or made the master mad in any way could get punished and beat bloody or sent away.

Q Quakers They were a religious group of people who were against slavery. A Quaker named Levi Coffin helped about 2000 people.

R Rights Slaves had no rights and could not be educated. They couldn’t own property. They didn’t have rights to be with there families.

S Slavery Slave auctions is how the slave owners got them. The slaves had been tricked or stolen from Africa on boats. They would work for the owners and didn’t get paid.

T Thomas Garrett Thomas was an abolitionist and a Quaker. He assisted 2700 slaves at least. He was an abolitionist for over 40 years. He got caught and was fined 5400 dollars wich is equivalent to 17,283 dollars today.

U Underground Railroad The Underground Railroad was a secret group of people and places that helped slaves escape to Canada or the Northern States. They had many code words. The name does not match the actual thing. It is not underground, and it is not a railroad.

V Victorious In the Civil War, the North won the big, bloody battle. Since the north won, all the slaves were freed.

W William Still William Still is a famous abolitionist who helped 675 slaves to their freedom. Still’s house was a busy station in the Underground Railroad.

X Xenophobia Xenophobia is a strong fear of strangers. White people thought black people were unusual so that might have been a reason or excuse white people treated black people so badly.

Y Yankee People who lived in the North were called Yankees as a opposing word because the South was with slavery and the North was against slavery.

Z Zig Zag The Underground Railroad did not go in a straight path. They went back and forth and left and right and went everywhere to avoid being caught.
