Kosmos a Berlin-based installation by Ulrich Vogl 2012

Installation art describes an artistic genre of three-dimensional work that is often display in specific spaces designed to transform the perception of a space.

Generally, Installations are displayed in interior spaces such as art galleries… LED display wall by Stig Skjelvik - Norway 2008

…Other installation art can be part of exterior displays or land art as it is often called. Installation by Nyo Win Maung, at NICA, 2003, Yangon, Myanmar

 Installation art can be either temporary or permanent. Installation artworks have been constructed in exhibition spaces such as museums and galleries, as well as public and private spaces. The genre incorporates a broad range of everyday and natural materials, such as video, sound, performance, immersive virtual reality and the internet.  In the following slides there are examples of some outstanding installation artists…

Beuys was a German performance artist as well as a sculptor, installation artist, graphic artist, art theorist and pedagogue of art. His extensive work is grounded in concepts of humanism, and social philosophy.

 This artwork was a symbolic installation that was created in 1974 in an American gallery on which he also made a photographic session and a video art shooting to document his work.  Beuys went to the New York USA solely to create this performance in a room with a wild coyote and some very particular items that symbolized his philosophical views, such as the coyote that represents Native Americans before westernization.

Jill Orr is a contemporary artist based in Melbourne, Australia. Orr is best known for her works in performance, photography, video and installation works that often explore the body, and its positioning within social, political and environmental contexts.

 This is an elemental suspension work, created for the camera. It was first exhibited in 1980 The artist is suspended over a fire by two ropes which are counterweighed by melting blocks of ice. As time progresses, the artist is lowered over the fire. This work represents the women’s pain and the request for freedom. In this performance, Orr takes on the role of both the subject and artist.

 was an English sculptor and artist. He was best known for his semi- abstract monumental bronze sculptures which are located around the world as public works of art.

 Through the use of maquettes, Moore was able to grasp the idea solidly, seeing it from all angles, rather than just flat on the picture plane. At this time in his life, the sculptor was able to afford the high cost of creating these enormous bronze monuments, giving him the freedom to produce works beyond the means of most artists.
