The Civil War: Vicksburg to Reconstruction

In May of 1863… General Ulysses S. Grant led Union troops to Vicksburg, Mississippi Essential Port on the Mississippi River Under siege for 6 weeks (May 18, July 4, 1863) Officially falls to the Union on July 4, 1863 SPLITS the Confederacy  Remember the Anaconda Plan?

Meanwhile, in Pennsylvania… Battle of Gettysburg July 1-3, 1863 Union Victory Turning Point of the War!

Gettysburg Address – November 1863 Lincoln described the Civil War as a struggle to preserve the nation was dedicated to the proposition that “all men are created equal” and that was ruled by a government “of the people, by the people, and for the people.” Lincoln believed America was “one nation,” not a collection of sovereign (individually ruled, like kingdoms) states. Southerners believed that states had freely joined the union and could freely leave it.

In May 1864… Grant becomes Commander of Union forces Sent from the Western Theatre (around the Mississippi River) to Virginia to deal with Lee and his army Faces some defeat but SEVERELY weakens Confederate forces

In August 1864, back in the Western Theatre… General William T. Sherman (who had been working closely with Grant) begins his March to the Sea Captured Atlanta, a munitions (weapons and ammo) capital in the South Burns buildings, destroys farms and factories In September, he takes Savannah

Lincoln is re-elected…

In February 1865, Sherman is still marching… Out of Georgia, he leads his troops through the Carolinas, destroying virtually everything in his path.

By April 1865… Confederacy: Lee’s army is incredibly weak Surrounded at Appomattox by Grant’s forces Lee formally surrenders to Grant at Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia on April 9 th, CIVIL WAR IS OVER.

Reconstruction

A plan for readmitting the southern states to the Union after the Civil War.

President Lincoln’s Plan GOAL: quickly restore legitimate state governments loyal to the Union in the South REQUIREMENTS: DO NOT PUNISH THE SOUTH Act “with malice towards none, charity for fall… to bind up the nation’s wounds…”

Why doesn’t President Lincoln carry out his plan for Reconstruction? Lincoln’s Assassination April 14, 1865 by John Wilkes Booth A southern sympathizer Well-known actor
