60 Seconds Start Timer Match the key words to their meanings!

What do you think we are looking at today? Lesson focus: To consider the utility and reliability of a source to a Historian. Lesson focus: To consider the utility and reliability of a source to a Historian.

Following the abolition of slavery in the USA in 1865, black people became members of American society. Do you think life will improve for us and our children over the next 20, 50 or 100 years? Can you remember any problems we might face as ex-slaves?

The Ballad of Emmett Till L.O; To consider the usefulness of songs as source material

By the end of this lesson… ALL OF US will be able to describe the story of Emmett Till. (4B-4A) EVEN BETTER IF you can give reasons why my song is useful or reliable to a Historian. (5C-5B) EXCELLENT IF you can explain different reasons why my song is reliable or useful. (5A-6B) CHALLENGE!!! Can you judge how useful and reliable my song is to a Historian investigating the death of Emmett Till. Can you judge how useful and reliable my song is to a Historian investigating the death of Emmett Till. (6A- 7B) L.O; To consider the usefulness of songs as source material

1.What can we learn from this source? 2. Is this source useful to find out about the death of Emmett Till? 3.What would make this source more useful? Listen to the song and answer the questions below!

We are going to try to judge whether songs are useful to us historians when we are trying to find out about events from the past. First, read through the story of what happened to Emmitt Till. Pick out the key details of what happened and summarize the story in NO MORE THAN FIVE SENTENCES. Who was Emmett? What happened to him? Why did this happen? What happened to those who did this to him? What were the consequences? 10 minutes

7 years later, Bob Dylan – who was the same age as Emmett – wrote the song you heard earlier. Around the words, explain what Dylan is telling us in each part of the song. You could circle parts of it and then draw an arrow to identify what he is talking about.

Now choose three colours; With one colour circle all the words where Dylan feels angry or outraged by Emmett’s story. In another colour, circle anything he tells us about Emmett Till. In a third, circle words where Dylan sounds optimistic or hopeful. Now choose three colours; With one colour circle all the words where Dylan feels angry or outraged by Emmett’s story. In another colour, circle anything he tells us about Emmett Till. In a third, circle words where Dylan sounds optimistic or hopeful. Now use your own knowledge of the death of Emmett Till to pick out: Two ways that the source can be seen as useful to a Historian investigating the death of Emmett Till. Two ways that the source can be seen as not being useful to a Historian investigating the death of Emmett Till. Now use your own knowledge of the death of Emmett Till to pick out: Two ways that the source can be seen as useful to a Historian investigating the death of Emmett Till. Two ways that the source can be seen as not being useful to a Historian investigating the death of Emmett Till.

So, can we really use this song as a piece of evidence? What do you think? Now compare the song with what you learned about Emmett Till earlier. HOW USEFUL IS THIS SONG TO A HISTORIAN INVESTIGATING THE DEATH OF EMMETT TILL? Now compare the song with what you learned about Emmett Till earlier. HOW USEFUL IS THIS SONG TO A HISTORIAN INVESTIGATING THE DEATH OF EMMETT TILL?

Hold up your green card if you can explain reasons why the source is/not reliable. Hold up your yellow card if you can give reasons why the source is/not useful or reliable. Hold up your red card if you were not sure what information the source gave you.

I was the same age as Emmett Till. I come from the north of America, not the south. My parents were pretty well-off, Jewish immigrants. I have left-wing beliefs. This means I believe that things have to change to make the world better and that I support poorer peoples’ rights. I started to support the Civil Rights Movement (aimed at getting fair rights for black people) in 1962, the year I wrote this song, and I often sang at Civil Rights concerts. On your sheet write down at least two reasons why this song is a reliable source and two reasons why it might not be reliable.

How does what you have just read about me affect how reliable this source is? How reliable is the song ‘The ballad of Emmet Till’ to a historian investigating the death of Emmet Till?

How useful and reliable is the source to a historian studying the death of Emmett Till? Key words Purpose Reliability Utility Equality Racism ALL OF US will be able to describe the story of Emmett Till. (6A- 7B) The source can be seen as being useful because it tells us that ‘They tortured him and did some things too evil to repeat.’ From my own knowledge I know that when Emmett was found he had been beaten, had an eye removed and…

Now self assess! Make sure that you give honest, constructive criticism. ALL OF US will be able to describe the story of Emmett Till.
