Quiz What wavelengths are effective for Neonatal jaundice treatment? Can one replace a bili-light by a fluorescence bulb?
Neonatal jaundice (Hyperbilirubinemia ) Clinical Use Neonatal jaundice (Hyperbilirubinemia ) 80% of premature children suffer from decreased liver functions, which builds up bilirubin in the blood Can cause long term nervous system damage

Retrieved from https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=jaundice+monitoring&tbm=shop Specifications non-invasively and instantly tests transcutaneous concentration of bilirubin correlative with serum bilirubin concentration Name: Jaundice Meter Introduction: The Jaundice Meter is not only elegant in appearance, small in volume, easy and safe for operation, but also quick for examining jaundice disaster of body without any pollution to be generated in use. Application: The jaundice meter measures bilirubin transcutaneously. Jaundice meter is an accurate, non-invasive device that will assist you in management of neonatal jaundice. And transfer into bilirubin according to bilirubin list. Jaundice meter can instantaneously measure and provide an estimate of serum bilirubin levels reported in mg/dl. Display: LCD, 3 figures

Neonatal jaundice (Hyperbilirubinemia ) Clinical Use Neonatal jaundice (Hyperbilirubinemia ) Mechanism of phototherapy: Blue-green light in the range of 460-490 nm is most effective for phototherapy. The absorption of light by the normal bilirubin (4Z,15Z-bilirubin) generates configuration isomers, structural isomers, and photooxidation products. The 2 principal photoisomers formed in humans are shown. Configurational isomerization is reversible and much faster than structural isomerization. Structural isomerization is slow and irreversible. Photooxidation occurs more slowly than both configurational and structural isomerization. Photooxidation products are excreted mainly in urine. Adapted from Maisel MJ, McDonagh AD. Commercial Examples Bili Blanket Light sources Flourescent Halogen with filter LED
Patient Safety Patients’ eyes must be protected from light Martybugs (2008), Phototherapy[image]. Retrieved from https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jaundice_phototherapy.jpg Note: never look directly at a UV light source
Common Problems Broken or missing blue light bulb Broken or missing UV lamps - Low lamp output - Loose mounts or frayed cables - Broken power cord - Broken fibres in Biliblanket and fibre optic cable if applicable. - insufficient cooling flow or blocked vent
Test Procedures Measure with a light meter and a filter Measure the light output 1/2 meter (20") from the bili light opening
Test Procedures If a light meter is not available the following test method may be required: Check the light source by leaving your arm exposed to the light for 30 minutes The next day, that part of your skin should be tan, but not burned
