Speakers situational briefing March 2016

The Sahel - WCA The Sahel forms a belt up to 1000 km wide, spanning Africa from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea

THANK YOU Please keep praying

Yasmin, 6, from Chad, West Africa I asked Yasmin to put in her bowl, all the food she would eat that day

Yasmin’s mum says… “If Yasmin goes to bed and doesn’t eat, she will by the next afternoon begin to cry for lack of food. She’ll go to play – but her hunger prevents her from playing. And she will come and lay down close to me on the matt. “In order for our children to eat we have reduced our frequency of meals, as adults. But the children often wake in the night asking for food.”

I asked Yasmin’s Mum, Yamana, to show me why her children are hungry

She took me to the river

The drone enabled us to see the problem as God does…

She took me to her fields

Jumana told me… “The rain came late and stopped early. If there had been 2 more weeks of rain the crops would have grown. “I used to be a very strong women but now I have been reduced to only thinking of how to feed my family. The situation has affected me. We are running our lives on a daily basis. I have been trying everything to protect the children – I am throwing everything I can at this.”

She took me to the ants nest

She refused to take me to the grave yard

‘We will not visit the grave’ “Four years ago, due to hunger, I lost a child. When I think of what that child went through before it died, it makes me feel very bad – I try not to think about it.”

I asked Jumana to put in a bowl a day’s food for her family

We asked our Church partner to put in Bread Baskets the foods our supporter can provide

Coping mechanisms Ants nests Grass seed gleaning Rope Factory (Jumana’s husband Osman is there) Basket weaving

And hope through Local church “We marvel at the way PEDC has supported us – even though it is not a Muslim organisation. They have shown a different face of Christians and Christianity. In fact we have been really touched and this has helped us to become closer to Christians” Page Number Footnote info here

Unlocking potential Even with handouts Page Number Footnote info here “I do feel God is answering our prayers – because things we terrible, then PEDC and the church came in and gave us food – oil, salt, flour – which gives us hope that God is at work and maybe things could get better.”
