Roseville College 2014

Our ICT Vision  To provide an outstanding educational environment that integrates technologies in teaching and learning and engages students in independent and flexible learning opportunities within and beyond the curriculum

Why BYOT for Years 7-12?  Research and feedback shows that students take more responsibility and ownership of their own personal devices  BYOT encourages students to learn with their own personal technology, and not just use them for social recreation  It provide a strong platform for differentiated, individualised and concept based learning

Purchasing  Which machine?  There is no right or wrong choice. Anything that meets the minimum requirements (as specified on the Community Portal) is suitable  Apple Mac – very popular, especially in Years  Windows PC. Obviously not as popular (or as trendy amongst teenage girls), but no less suitable.  Be aware that peer pressure is significant in Years  Make sure you daughter has a working knowledge of her laptop before Term 1, 2014  Highly recommended that any new purchase is done in time for Christmas.

Purchasing  Preferred Resellers  CompNow (HP and Apple)  Apple: Low and high spec MacBook Air (1.35kg)  Windows: Low and high spec HP ProBook 430 (1.4kg)  Benefits:  3 year onsite Roseville College) warranty  24/7 phone support  Optional accidental damage cover  Have been tested by the college to ensure suitability in terms of weight, speed, battery life, etc  Excellent value for money

Purchasing  Other Options:  Hiring from the College  2014 model: Dell Latitude E6320  Current staff and Year 6 student laptop  $ (inc GST ) per term  Further details on Community Portal  Purchasing or hiring problematic - discuss alternate options with Mrs Michelle Blood (Business Manager) | (02)

If you have an existing machine  Minimum requirements  Less than 3 years old  Has a current warranty  Is no heavier than 2.2 kg  Genuine 5-6 hours battery life  Screen Size: inch screen size. (12" and under are generally too small for sustained laptop use, and 15" and over are generally too heavy)  Modern operating system - Windows 7 or higher, Mac OSX 10.7 (Lion) or higher. We do not support Windows XP or Vista.

Software discounts – new for 2014  Microsoft Office  Latest version of Office for Windows or Mac for $15.00 per student  Each upgrade is an additional $15.00  Licence is perpetual until student leaves Roseville College  Adobe Creative Suite  Adobe Cloud Enterprise (Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, Dreamweaver, InDesign, etc)  Photoshop and Premiere Elements  FREE where no video based apps are used (Premiere), or $8.00 per student per year  Subject to final confirmation from Adobe and AIS NSW  No requirement to purchase either software suite, however they are highly recommended

Access to resources at school  Wireless coverage across entire campus  1GB fibre connection to the Internet  Access to all resources that can be accessed at home:  RosePod  MyFiles (Online Docs)  Google Apps (including Google Drive and student )  Printing  Virtual Applications (Sibelius, Acid, Geometer’s SketchPad)

Support and Servicing  Important Preventative Tips  Where possible, have your daughter’s laptop covered by a 3 year onsite warranty  Where possible, have accidental damage coverage on the laptop  Where possible, organise insurance on the laptop under your home and contents or a separate policy  Ensure that you purchase a decent protective sleeve or cover for the laptop when being transported. We strongly recommend the Higher Ground Flak Jacket (more information available at the Community Portal under the Technology FAQ section)

Support and Servicing  Services offered by Roseville ICT Service Desk  Assistance in accessing any Roseville College resource (wireless, RosePod, printing, etc) and the Internet  Can assist where there is a minor software issue with the laptop  Cannot assist when there is a hardware fault or where there is a significant software issue  ICT Service Desk is open 8am-4pm including holidays  Online support form available under Community Portal for parents

Support and Servicing  Services offered by Roseville ICT Service Desk  Will provide a spare laptop where a student laptop has a minor problem and can’t be repaired quickly, or where there is a significant fault.  Spare laptops will be issued for initial period of 3 weeks and then reviewed after that.  If laptop was purchased from a preferred reseller, once repair is organised with reseller, laptop can be left at IT Service Desk and then collected after repair  No question too small or silly. Please encourage your daughter’s to visit ICT if they have any query or problem.
