Assessment Feedback A*-AA*-C 14/2218/22 63%82%

Question 1: Are you surprised? Full marks required you to argue that you were not surprised because either… It was early in the war and restrictions on the media introduced by DORA would not have come into full effect yet Local newspapers were not so strictly controlled by DORA and therefore it was easier for them to publish more information.

Question 2: How similar? You would get 6 marks for identifying that both sources were positive about the troops or the battle. You would get 7 marks for showing that Source F is only positive where as Source E admits some failures. Full marks required you to argue that they were not similar because: Source E can be trusted and Source F cannot. Source E is a local newspaper with information from soldiers letters telling the truth of what happened. Source F is government propaganda celebrating the successes of the Somme which we know are exaggerated. This has been controlled by DORA.

Question 3: ‘In the years people in Britain did not know what was really happening in the war.’ AGREEDISAGREE Use of propaganda to boost morale and glorify war Use of censorship to enforce good news only policy from DORA Local press were less heavily controlled by DORA Information from soldiers returning home and letters Source ASource FSource B and GSource C and E PRE/POST 1914 Pre = freedom of press before WW1, people’s views of war before 1914 remained unchanged for the first couple of years due to propaganda Post = everything else!! Conclusion: Overall – how true Be careful not to argue completely true
