There are certain rules to follow when evaluating a mathematical expression. These rules should always be followed from left to right.

Do all work in parentheses. In the following equation what should you do first? (2 x 10) – 12 ÷ 2

– 12 ÷ 2 ©La-Nette Mark 2013

Do all exponents. What should you do next? – 12 ÷ 2 ©La-Nette Mark 2013

– 12 ÷ – 12 ÷ 2 ©La-Nette Mark 2013

Do all multiplication and division. What should you do next? – 12 ÷ 2 ©La-Nette Mark 2013

– 12 ÷ – 6 ©La-Nette Mark 2013

Do all addition and subtraction. What should you do next? – 6 *Remember to always go from left to right ©La-Nette Mark 2013

– 6 29 – 6 21 ©La-Nette Mark 2013

A common method for remembering the order of operations is the abbreviation "PEMDAS", which represents the phrase "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally". The first letter in each word stands for "Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, and Addition and Subtraction". ©La-Nette Mark 2013
