Austrian Society for Systems Engineering and Automation ZeroWINGoal to develop of innovative technologies, waste- prevention methodologies, strategies and system tools exportable into other European and worldwide contexts. to develop a structured and innovative production model based on industrial symbiosis for resource-use optimisation and waste prevention, also taking residues as secondary raw materials, and test it in real cases of sustainable industrial networks.

Austrian Society for Systems Engineering and Automation ZeroWIN Industrial symbiosis Industrial Symbiosis Industrial Symbiosis is focusing on a regional collaboration of companies from traditionally different sectors to exchange by-products, energy, water and materials in such a way, that the waste from one industry becomes raw material for another. At least three different entities must be involved in exchanging at least two different resources to be counted as a basic type of industrial symbiosis.

Austrian Society for Systems Engineering and Automation ZeroWIN Expected Results a decrease of at least 30% of greenhouse gases emissions, at least 70% of overall re-use and recycling of waste, a reduction of at least 75% of fresh water utilisation.

Austrian Society for Systems Engineering and Automation ZeroWIN Target Group nearly 3 million companies (of which 80% are SMEs) with more than 2,8 trillion € turnover and a value creation of more than 800 billion € with more than 20 million employees creating about 40% or more than 400 million tons of industrial waste using as much as 50% of all materials extracted from the earth´s crust generating about 40% of all energy use and about 35% of all greenhouse gas emissions.

Austrian Society for Systems Engineering and Automation ZeroWIN WP1 - Vision on Zero Waste Entrepreneurship and sustainable Industrial Networks Objectives  to define a common vision on zero-waste entrepreneurship and sustainable industry within the first six months  Facilitate contact and co-ordination of stakeholder involvement, including participating industrial networks  Develop a system view of all activities, including finding the interdependencies.  Define a commonly-agreed ”zero-waste vision”

Austrian Society for Systems Engineering and Automation ZeroWIN WP2 - Innovative Technologies for Individual Producer Responsibility and Product Re-use Objectives: Identification and analysis of new technological developments, such as: Technologies for IPR Dematerialisation and decarbonisation Enabling technologies for re-use Goals: Development of the technological concepts and identification of technological barriers. Development of the roadmaps for the enabling technologies that will be required to reach the state of zero waste.

Austrian Society for Systems Engineering and Automation ZeroWIN WP3 - Waste Prevention Methodologies and Strategies Objectives: Development of waste prevention methodologies and strategies for: High-tech products: flat panel products and photovoltaic systems Construction sector Automotive sector Goals: A methodological approach for a D4R stakeholder process for product-related zero waste entrepreneurship A best practice design guideline and roadmap for flat panel display products An integrated strategy for zero-waste demolition, refurbishment and modernization of buildings

Austrian Society for Systems Engineering and Automation ZeroWIN WP4 - Analysis of existing System Tools and Improvement of their applicability to industrial networks Objectives: Investigation of available tools being able to provide support on the criteria set out in the call: a decrease of at least 30% greenhouse gas emissions, at least 70% of overall re-use and recycling of waste and a reduction of at least 75% of fresh water utilisation the mandatory requirements for the case studies as given in WP6 and WP7 to produce Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Cost/Benefits Analysis and Social Life Cycle Analysis Goal: Collection of available tools and methods that measure environmental and sustainability aspects within the life cycles of products and systems in order to support the quantification of impacts as well as the identification of feasible improvement measures.

Austrian Society for Systems Engineering and Automation ZeroWIN WP5 - Zero Waste Entrepreneurship: Production Model Objectives : The development of an innovative and structured production model for resource-use optimisation and waste prevention based on the results of WPs 1, 2, 3, 4 and 7. Test and calibrate the production model with the results under real life conditions from the case studies in WP 6. Goals: Shift the traditional industrial model in which wastes are considered the norm, to an integrated systems in which everything has its use. Help for entrepreneurs to set up new companies or convert their existing companies accordant to the new production model Support local governments and cluster management to set up new local clusters or to transform existing ones

Austrian Society for Systems Engineering and Automation ZeroWIN WP6A - Conceptual Development of Case Studies for Industrial Networks Objectives: Bring together all theoretical work done in the preceding workpackages and prepare the practical case studies for WP6B. Goals: Use of the findings from the case studies to update, calibrate and streamline methodologies, strategies and the production model. Quantification of estimated improvements for all case studies will be performed in collaboration with WP7 in order to compare the status quo and to prove that at least 2 of the stringent targets of the call are met.

Austrian Society for Systems Engineering and Automation ZeroWIN WP6B - Pilot Applications in Industrial Networks Objective: Demonstration of practical pilot applications in industrial networks which have been conceptually elaborated according to WP6A. Goals: Development of prototypes and testing their marketability and detecting potential barriers. development of industrial networks to demonstrate benefits and optimisation potential which can be achieved through focused cooperation.

Austrian Society for Systems Engineering and Automation ZeroWIN WP6B - Pilot Applications in Industrial Networks Case studies: Implementation of design recommendations in high-tech products: D4R laptop D4R Photovoltaic system ReUse Networks: ReUse Network for ICT products Zero-Waste construction & Demolition of EOL Buildings: Case studies 4 and 5 are centred on the construction of new buildings Sustainable Refurbishment of the Deutsche Bank headquarters in Frankfurt and Sustainable Construction of the Headquarters of Roche in Basel Case Studies on demolition of EOL buildings Automotive

Austrian Society for Systems Engineering and Automation ZeroWIN WP7 - Quantitative Assessment Objectives: Provide a comparative integrated assessment of different waste prevention measures. Methodological adjustment and definition of data requierements. Goal: The quantitative assessment will provide evidence that the waste prevention techniques employed have fullfilled the stringent targets of the call.

Austrian Society for Systems Engineering and Automation ZeroWIN WP8 - Policy Implications and Recommendations Objectives: Identification of national, regional and global policies influencing relevant to resource-use optimisation and waste prevention. Identification and analysis of key-actors in the relevant policy decision making processes. Involvement of key-actors in identifying solutions for an efficient implementation of these policies. Goal: Development of an strategic approach of how the concepts, tools, and technologies developed under the ZeroWIN project can be successfully integrated into existing and future EU policies.

Austrian Society for Systems Engineering and Automation ZeroWIN WP9 - Dissemination Objectives to raise general awareness of project works; to support the scientific discussions and exchanges on the development and achievement of the project work packages; to support the identification and recruitment of participants, experts through corresponding members group, that would benefit from and contribute to the project works; to promote and diffuse the products and deliverables developed by the project during the whole period of the project and more intensively in the last project years by organizing a series of at least 10 dissemination events.

Austrian Society for Systems Engineering and Automation ZeroWIN WP10 - Project Management and Coordination Objectives Overall administrative and financial co-ordination. Continuous control of quality, expenditures and time schedule Co-ordination of general project meetings and workshops including Steering Board meetings. Timely delivery of project output of all partners to the European Commission. Goal: To ensure an efficient operation of the ZeroWIN project.
