Global E3: Partnership Models for Engineering Student Mobility April 19, 2016 U.S. STEM Study Abroad Capacity-Building Workshop Sabeen Altaf Senior Program Manager, STEM & Private Programs Institute of International Education (IIE)

About the Institute of International Education (IIE)  Administers the Fulbright Fellowships on behalf of the U.S. Department of State & 200 other programs including Global Engineering Education Exchange (Global E3), the Whitaker Int’l Program, and the Brazil Scientific Mobility Program  Serves over 25,000 students, teachers, scholars, and professionals in 175 countries annually  Runs the IIENetwork: a global resource for 5,000 professionals at 1,400 member colleges & universities  Collects and disseminates data on international student mobility via Open Doors

3 Open Doors data on U.S. Study Abroad Trends  304,467 U.S. students received academic credit for study abroad in 2013/14, a 5.2% increase over the previous year.

STEM Fields Study Abroad as Percent of Total Study Abroad, 2000/01 – 2013/14 StudentsPercent of Total Study Abroad  Students in the STEM fields comprise a total of 22.6 percent of all students who study abroad. Physical/Life Science Health Engineering Computer/Math 8.0% 6.0% 4.6% 2.1%

Global Engineering Education Exchange (Global E 3 ) Global E 3: : Global Engineering Education Exchange  Coordinates academic exchanges (study abroad) of mostly undergraduate engineering students from universities worldwide  Students can spend up to one year in host country  Tuition-Swap: Student pays tuition at home university, not to host  History/Impact  Approximately 300 engineering students study abroad annually through Global E³  Over 3,000 engineering students gained international experience through Global E³ since its inception in 1995  Global Presence  75 member universities in 24 countries in Europe, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East/North Africa, Oceania, and the U.S.

Global E 3 Consortium Member Benefits  Centralized Administration (provided by IIE)  Eliminates the need to manage multiple bilateral agreements  Provides more options for students to study in countries or fields which existing bilateral agreements may not accommodate  Access, through single agreement with IIE, to dozens of universities  Cost Savings  Reduces administrative cost of managing multiple MOUs and bilateral exchanges  Unlimited number of students exchanged under one fee  Eliminates Barriers for Engineering Students to Study Abroad  Annual Members Meeting Share Best Practices Network Learn what is new in Engineering Education

Best Practices for internationalizing engineering: Lessons learned from Global E 3  ABET accreditation or national equivalent for all participating Engineering Programs  Experience hosting international students and have emergency contacts at each campus, plus security plan  Need a diversified Engineering Curriculum  Assure buy-in from Study Abroad Office and Engineering Department  Start small; be strategic; be innovative and engage faculty  Recruit students in both directions
