Adolf Hitler Rise to Power

Overall Purpose: The overall purpose of this presentation is to explain how this little boy on the left became the man on the right who was ultimately responsible for the death of about 50 million people all over the world!!

Birth Adolf Hitler was born on April 20, 1889 in Braunau, Austria. Adolf was 1 of 6 children - 3 of who died at early ages

Parents Alois Schickelgruber Hitler was a customs official who was illegitimate by birth. His father, Adolf’s grandfather, may have been Jewish. He died when Adolf was 14 and left him a small inheritance. Klara Hitler was very young when she married the older Alois. She showered young Adolf with love and affection. Adolf carried a picture of his mom until the day he died. She died of breast cancer when Adolf was 18 years old.

Education Attended a Benedictine monastery school where he took part in the choir. When it was time to choose a secondary school, Adolf wanted to become an artist. His father wanted him to become a civil servant, but after his father died, he dropped out of high school and attempted to get into the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts - he failed. Things to Ponder Judging on his upbringing do you think anyone predicted what would become of Adolf Hitler? What do you think life would be like living under a dictator like Hitler?

Hitler endured and survived four years of World War I. During this time, he was awarded two Iron Crosses for bravery. Hitler sustained two major injuries during the war. The first occurred in October 1916 when he was wounded by a grenade splinter. The other was on October 13, 1918, when a gas attack caused Hitler to go temporarily blind. It was while Hitler was recovering from the gas attack that the armistice (i.e. the end of the fighting) was announced. Hitler was furious that Germany had surrendered and felt strongly that Germany had been "stabbed in the back" by its leaders.

Hitler’s Rise to Power Key Dates JUNE 28, 1919 TREATY OF VERSAILLES ENDS WORLD WAR I OCTOBER 24, 1929 STOCK MARKET CRASH IN NEW YORK NOVEMBER 6, 1932 NAZIS LOSE SUPPORT IN PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS In the Reichstag (German parliament) elections of November 1932, the Nazis lose almost two million votes from the previous elections of July. They win only 33 percent of the vote. It seems clear that the Nazis will not gain a majority in democratic elections, and Adolf Hitler agrees to a coalition with conservatives. After months of negotiations, the president of Germany, Paul von Hindenburg, will appoint Hitler chancellor of Germany in a government seemingly dominated by conservatives on January 30, 1933.

Hitler’s Rise to Power Key Dates continued FEBRUARY 27, 1933 REICHSTAG (GERMAN PARLIAMENT) BUILDING DESTROYED BY FIRE MARCH 5, 1933 NAZIS FAIL TO WIN MAJORITY IN REICHSTAG (GERMAN PARLIAMENT) ELECTIONS Despite the state of emergency declared in February 1933 and the extraordinary powers assumed by Adolf Hitler, the Nazis fail to win a governing majority in parliamentary elections. The Nazis win only about 45 percent of the vote. Later in March 1933, Hitler introduces a bill that would give his government the power to decree laws without submitting them to a vote in the German parliament. The bill will pass, in part because of the arrest of many Communist and Socialist opponents before the vote on the bill. MARCH 23, 1933 THE REICHSTAG (GERMAN PARLIAMENT) VOTES LEGISLATIVE POWER TO HITLER JUNE 30, 1934 NIGHT OF THE LONG KNIVES A purge of the Storm Trooper (SA) leadership and other supposed opponents of Adolf Hitler's regime takes place. This purge comes to be known as the "Night of the Long Knives." More than 80 SA leaders are arrested and shot without trial. Hitler claims that the purge is a response to a plot by the SA to overthrow the government.

Hitler’s rise to Power Key Dates APRIL 1, 1933 NATIONWIDE BOYCOTT OF JEWISH-OWNED BUSINESSES NUREMBERG LAWS ARE INSTITUTED/ September 15 th,1935 At their annual party rally, the Nazis announce new laws that make Jews second-class citizens and revoke most of their political rights. Further, Jews are prohibited from marrying or having sexual relations with persons of "German or related blood." "Racial infamy," as this becomes known, is made a criminal offense. The Nuremberg Laws define a "Jew" as someone with three or four Jewish grandparents or who is a practicing Jew. Consequently, the Nazis classify as Jews thousands of people who have converted from Judaism to another religion, among them even Roman Catholic priests and nuns and Protestant ministers whose grandparents were Jewish. NOVEMBER 9, 1938 "KRISTALLNACHT": A NATIONWIDE POGROM

On July 20, 1944, Hitler barely survived an assassination attempt. One of his top military officers had placed a suitcase bomb under the table during a conference meeting at Hitler's Wolf's Lair. Because the table leg blocked much of the blast, Hitler survived with only injuries to his arm and some hearing loss. Not everyone in the room was so lucky. On April 29, 1945, Hitler married his long-time mistress, Eva Braun. The following day, April 30, 1945, Hitler and Eva committed suicide together.
