Writing 1 The Second Semester Presented by Dr. Mohamed Sha’at

Aims of the Session Students are expected to revise the tenses of English language and to use them effectively.

1- Nurses look after patients in hospitals. 2- They live with their family in Rafah. 3. Sarah usually goes away two or three times a year. 4- The bus leaves at 8.15 a.m. 5- The plane arrives at10.30 p.m. We use the present simple tense to talk about things in general. We use it to say that something happens all the time, or something is true in general. Also, it is used for official future. The Present Simple Tense:

1- Sarah is driving to work. 2- The boys and girls are enjoying the party. 3. David wants to work in America, so he is learning English. 4. I am meeting Ali at the airport this evening. 5- He is leaving to Canada next week. We use the present continuous tense to talk about actions that are happening now and to describe planned future. The Present Continuous:

1- Water boils at 100 degree Celsius. 2- The water boils. Can you turn it off. 3- Look, the man tries to open the door of your car. 4- Can you hear those people? What are they talking about? 5- ‘Hurry up. It’s time to leave.’ Ok, I come. Are the underlined verbs right or wrong:

1- Salwa ate her lunch two hours ago. 2- Mozart wrote more than 600 pieces of music. 3- He taught English for more than 20 years. 4- We saw him in town a few days ago. As you can see this tense is used to describe actions that happened and finished in the past. The Past Simple Tense

1- When the accident happened, I was sleeping. 2- While they were playing football, Kate was watching television. 3- I saw you in the park while you were sitting on the grass and reading a book. 4- Yesterday evening, they were chatting together. We use the past continuous tense to say that someone was in the middle of doing something at a certain time in the past. The Past Continuous Tense

Correct the Verb Tense I ……… (meet) Tom and Jane at the airport a few weeks ago. They ……. (go) to London and I …….. (go) to Rome. We ……… (have) a nice chat while we ………… (wait) for our flights.
