Since the Greeks and Romans ruled the earth there have been philosophers and educators that have been pondering about human nature. Some of the questions they have posed are:  What is the meaning of life?  Are we predominantly good or evil?  What determines a person’s behavior and personality?  Would you like to super size that order?  Two of the most popular philosophers were Niccolo Machiavelli and B.F. Skinner.

Makaveli the rapper There was a rapper in the 90’s that went by the name Makaveli and recorded an album in 7 days called “The 7 day Theory” Wrote a song called “Hail Mary” where he talks about being leader of a new group about to take control. What was the other name this rapper went by?

Day 2- Theories and perspectives of Deviance

What does it mean to be deviant? A deviant is a person that shows a behavior that breaks social norms (laws of society) (VOCAB) However even though it breaks a social norm it does not have to be a crime

Lets think of a list of acts that are considered deviant Remember it does not have to be a crime to break a norm  Not following cleanliness, appearance or fashion norms.

Deviants come in all shapes and sizes, they aren't breaking the same norm so they will never look the same

Becoming a deviant Now that we know what a deviant is, how does a person become a deviant? Going back to yesterday…What makes a good person commit a crime (become a deviant)?

Three Different Theories on Deviance 1. Functionalism 2. Conflict 3. Internationalism

Functionalism The main theory for functionalism is Strain theory: Views deviance as a natural process where cultural goals (success) and cultural norms for success are internalized in each person If you follow the cultural goals and norms then you conform to society, if not you become a deviant

Conflict Perspective Constant conflict between those in power and those not in power People with power commit deviant acts to maintain power  Any behavior threatening power is deviant People without power commit deviance to obtain rewards or because they feel powerless.

Interactionist Perspective Believe we learn deviance through interaction Three different major explanations of deviance 1 st fact2 nd fact Control theoryThose with strong community ties will conform to rules Those without strong community will be deviant Cultural transmission Deviance is a learned behavior When you witness deviant act you think its ok. Labeling theoryEveryone is a deviant, it depends on whether you are labeled as a deviant. Can lead to more crimes. Primary (undetected deviance) vs. Secondary (detected deviance)

Guided Practice: Examples of Deviance Directions: Decide what perspective each deviance fits into and explain why. A man who didn’t have many friends or places where he fit in in his community is caught shoplifting from Best Buy A very successful salesman at Best Buy refuses to accept a promotion that he is offered by his manager because he likes only working 4 days a week Voters in Charlotte are kept from voting because of a reduction of polling hours by the governor Man arrested for selling drugs to pay for his night school tuition Police come to a party and recognize a man from an arrest a week earlier for possession of drugs. Man searched for drugs and drugs are found. An 18 year gets a tattoo because his older brother got a tattoo when he was 18. After going failing his 12 th grade Calculus class a student decides to drop out of high school all together.

Newspaper article (Individual Activity) Each person will be given a perspective and then write a newspaper article about a deviance that would fit into that perspective. You must come up with your own original example. At least two paragraphs:  First paragraph describes the person and a little bit of background about him.  Second paragraph describes the deviance and why it represents that perspective. Put as much detail as possible You have 25 minutes

Writing assignment for homework Write a one paragraph description in which you answer this question: Think of a time when you committed an act that your parents or a mentor would look down upon. What made you want to do it? Do you think it was a good reason to do it? Would other people do it for that reason? Would you do it again if given the chance?
