SUCCESS SEARCHING FOR TERMS IN SNOMED CT

Success with SNOMED CT Things are normally in the singular, e.g. eye not eyes When searching don’t always use full words, e.g. diab would return both diabetic and diabetes Don’t enter words like “and”, “to” and “the”

Success with SNOMED CT Use techniques similar to how you currently search the internet and medical publications Search for significant words and don’t worry about the order, e.g. implant lumbar cath would return implantation of lumbar epidural catheter Try common abbreviations, e.g. PID for prolapsed intervertebral disc

Appendicitis Lets say we want to find the diagnosis of appendicitis. This is a disorder: all symptoms and diagnoses sit in the ‘Clinical Finding Hierarchy’, those that are a diagnosis are ‘disorders’

Stroke Lets look for all terms relating to “stroke” including how to find things like “history of stroke”

NEW TERMS

Requesting New Terms SNOMED CT is a dynamic product which is constantly evolving To request a new term or concept direct from the UKTC use the Request Submission Portal and select SNOMED CT from the products list – Users need to register first to request new terms or changes. It is possible once registered to view existing requests from other users to see if the term has already been requested

Summary Remember when searching for terms: –They are normally in the singular –Just type the start of words –Don’t enter words like “to” and “the” –Try commonly used abbreviations In some browsers you can limit what you see Use the hierarchies to find groups of terms by searching for a high level term first Search for terms used by a specialty rather than the specialty itself
