Presentation transcript:

 Pick up a handout and a copy of The Outsiders.  Read the note from the author. 4/18/16

Make sure you have a section for notes. I WILL be checking at the end.  Teen violence in America  Wealth disparity/Distribution of Wealth in America  Peer Pressure  Family structure/dynamics  Drug/alcohol abuse

Write a second paragraph explaining a method you apply to cope with conflicts you encounter. Include:  Your strategy  What issue(s) you have addressed/are addressing/will address  How the issue(s) impacts other people  How it applies to both INTERNAL and EXTERNAL conflict  Why you believe it will be successful  Alternatives if your strategy does not work

 Unless YOU make it so, you and I are the ONLY people from class who will see what you write.  Because this is a form of personal writing, your tone may be informal, and the style should be reflective of your personality.  Please be mindful of organization of thought, clarity, and grammar.  At this point, it is ASSUMED that you understand correct MLA formatting for your work. A ½ point will be deducted for each error if any are present.

 Notes are TENTATIVELY due 5/16/16.  Follow-up assignment is TENTATIVELY due 5/18/16.  You CAN work on the follow-up assignment as we read instead of leaving it all to the last minute!

 Be sure to fill in your notes as you read/listen.  We will review characters and how the issues on your list relate to them at this point (some may not apply yet) at the conclusion of the chapter.  I’ll show you some pictures so you know what Ponyboy is talking about.

 You have the ENTIRE PERIOD to work on your narrative. Please don’t waste it.  If you have not shared your format with me, then please do so NOW.  I will do a check-in with each of you to gauge progress. 4/19/16

 You have the ENTIRE PERIOD to work on your narrative. Please don’t waste it.  I will do a check-in with each of you to gauge progress. 4/20/16

 Pick up a copy of The Outsiders.  We will continue (hopefully finish Chapter 1) today and discuss characters and social issues. Please take notes as you listen.  Narrative due on Wednesday. 4/21/16

 Direct: Details about character are provided by author. “He’s got eyes that are like two pieces of pale blue-green ice. They’ve got a determined set to them, like the rest of him” (Hinton 6).  Indirect: Details about characters must be inferred. “Darry looked as if he’d like to knock our heads together, ‘You’re both nuts.’ Soda cocked one eyebrow, a trick he’d picked up from Two-Bit. ‘It seems to run in this family’” (Hinton 8).

 Take a copy of The Outsiders. We will finish discussing Chapter 1, and then you will have time to work on your narrative (last opportunity in class).  Narrative is due on WEDNESDAY. There is no class on Tuesday. 4/22/16

Remember these?  Protagonist (Hero)  Antagonist (Villain)  Mentor  Trickster  Shapeshifter  Herald  Threshold Guardian

CharacterArchetypeProof of Archetype (pg.) Direct Characterization Indirect Characterization Choose a character to follow and gather information about him/her. At the end of the book, you will be given an assignment to prove that the character is the type of archetype that you say he/she is (At least 2). Record page numbers where both DIRECT and INDIRECT characterization occurs for this person (At least 2 EACH). This will be used for a GRADED assignment later

 What does that mean?  How do you know it’s character-driven?  Examples from other literature/movies?  How are the social issues listed on your paper impacting them at this point?
