1.Select an Explorer from the list located on my Class Website: 1.From the CPSB homepage, select Combre-Fondel from the “Select a School” drop-down box. 2.Click on “Faculty” then “5 th Grade” then select “Website” next to my name. 3.On my Web page, click the “Social Studies” menu button and select the “Explorers” folder. 4.Open the “List of Explorers” page and select one explorer to be the focus of your research. 2.Open netTrekker to search for and locate a website containing information about your explorer: 1.From my Web page, click on the “Websites” button and find the link to “netTrekker”. 2.Open netTrekker Search and, if prompted, select “Dorthea Combre Elem” from the drop down menu. 3.In the Search box, select, “Famous Person” then enter the name of your explorer in the text box. 3.Complete the Explorer Information Sheet, making sure to include information for every field on the form. 4.Use the information that you recorded on your Explorer Information sheet to complete the Explorer Profile mock Facebook page. Don’t forget to draw a picture to represent your explorer and fully complete each field on the profile page. 1.Select an Explorer from the list provided to you 2. Using netTrekker, conduct a search for your chosen explorer. Take according to the guiding questions provided to you in your Word template (e.g, When did live? What was he like? Etc.) 3.When you have taken notes according to the guiding questions, use the Safari web browser on an iPad to search for an image of your explorer. Save the image to your photo stream by tapping an holding on the image you want to save until a menu pops up with the option to “Save Image” 4.On the iPad, open up the app called Trading Cards and follow these steps to create your “Explorer Trading Card” 1.If you have not used the app on this iPad before, click on “Create New User” and enter your first name, then click on your name in the list. 2.Tap the “Create New Card” button. Type the name of your explorer where it says “Type your card title” then select “Real Person” and tap “next” (it may automatically move you to the next screen). 3.Using your notes, fill in each of the text boxes on both the front and the back of the card. Remember, that the amount of text you can fit is limited, so you may need to edit your information. 4.To add your image of the explore, tap on the picture icon (at the top, next to the image field), then browse the photo stream until you find the image you want. Once it is added to your card you will need to resize it by pinching it and center by dragging until it looks the way you want it. 5.You may also choose to change the look of your card by selecting “Change Card Design”. 6.Once you are satisfied with your card, tap the “Keep It” button, which will save your work and return you to the screen where you created your first card. 7.Finally, tap on the Share It! Button at the bottom of your card and select “Save to Photos” 5.You’re finished! Your teacher will retrieve the trading cards from the photo roll and print them out to create a complete set. This task uses: Learning Objective(s): Social Studies (2004) GLE 31: Describe major early explorations and explorers and their reasons for exploration (H-1B-M2) Social Studies (2011) 5.2.2: Identify early explorers and their motivations, challenges and achievements.

1.Select an explorer from the list provided on my classroom website. 2.Using your textbook, other print sources, and online sources learn about your explorer as outlined in your research packet, be sure to include personal information such as birth/death, nationality, purpose of expeditions (including who was financing), travel routes and dates of the expedition(s), results of expedition(s), importance of discovery, any other interesting facts. 3.While conducting research online, use the browser on an iPad to look for an image of your explorer (painting) that shows at least his head and shoulders in a posed portrait. Save the image to your photo roll to be used later. 4.Using the information gathered during your research, compose a brief (30-second) first-person speech in which your explorer introduces himself and tells about his expeditions and discoveries. Revise and rehearse until the speech can be delivered in 30 seconds. 5.Open up the ChatterPix app on the iPad and browse to the photo roll to find the explorer image you saved earlier. 6.Draw a line where you want his mouth to move (open and shut). Then tap the microphone and record your speech as you have rehearsed it. 7.Once you are satisfied with your recording (you can preview it) tap next to add some props to your photo, including adding the explorer’s name using the text tool. 8.When you have completed this step, tap next once more and save the photo to the camera roll. 9.Load your video on my Blackboard site under the “Age of Exploration” discussion board. View and respond to one other video. This task uses: Learning Objective(s): Social Studies (2004) GLE 31: Describe major early explorations and explorers and their reasons for exploration (H-1B-M2) Social Studies (2011) 5.2.2: Identify early explorers and their motivations, challenges and achievements.

1.Select an explorer from the list on my classroom website. 2.Using your textbook, other print sources and online sources, research your explorer making sure to focus on details of his expedition(s) including routes, purpose, discoveries, importance of discoveries, challenges faced. 3.Then, based on your research, select an event or short series of events from the explorer’s expeditions and retell it using the story arc: setup (introducing setting/characters); conflict (problem); challenge (a barrier that must be overcome); climax (solving the problem); resolution (what happens next). 4.Once you have drafted your story, open up the Toontastic app on the iPad and begin to craft/animate each scene by selecting the appropriate setting and then adding characters that make sense with your story. 5.For each scene, you will select setting and characters & props, then manipulate the characters and record a voiceover. When you are done with your animations and narration, you can also add a music soundtrack. 6.Once you are finished with your video and are satisfied with it, tap “Done” in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. Give your movie a title and list your stage name(s) in the Directed By field, then check the box “Export to Camera Roll” and tap the green checkmark. 7.Your teacher will upload the video to the class SchoolTube site. Once all the videos are uploaded, visit the SchoolTube site and view at least two other videos and comment on them.
