Past Perseid Meteor Showers by Moyea PowerPoint

Astronomers observe the night sky for the Perseid meteor shower on Aug. 12, The annual meteor shower suffered last year from bright moonlight. The best time to view this year's show is late Wednesday and Thursday nights into the early-morning hours.

A Perseid meteor streaks across the sky on Aug. 11, 2009, in Vinton, Calif. The shower is the result of debris left over from the comet Swift-Tuttle in The comet itself hasn't been spotted since 1992.

The walls of the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area outside of Las Vegas glow as shooting stars fly though the skies in The comet gets its name from the constellation Perseus since the meteors usually radiate from that location in the sky.

The meteor shower is viewed from the Laguna Mountains in San Diego County in The shower peaks from Aug. 11 to 12 each year. Most meteors are about the size of a grain of sand. They enter the Earth's atmosphere and burn up, causing the spectacular light show.

A Perseid meteor streaks toward clouds on the horizon in this 30-second time-exposure photograph from 2002 in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

A bright meteor cuts across Orion's Belt in this 1997 time-exposure photo, taken in California's Joshua Tree National Park.
