Tools to Promote Responsible Business Conduct A Short History of CSR Tools Paul Hohnen, Sustainability Strategies, Amsterdam Bangkok, 4 November 2009

The Evolving CSR Landscape Early 1990s: Generic business tools Late 1990s: Partnership-developed 2000: Government interest Early 2000s: Sector specific 2010: Towards coherence?

The Future of CSR ‘Business as usual’ Minority of companies use existing CSR tools (Global Compact, OECD Guidelines, GRI, etc.) ISO joins list & extends uptake. Private company specific tools develop further. Issues of credibility, monitoring, free riders, consistency increase. Pressures for regulation rise. State based systems emerge. Increased coherence Government supported action to promote greater coherence between leading instruments Public agencies and public owned companies use ISO,OECD, GC and GRI Increased consistency and profile leads to higher levels of uptake. Government -driven Faced with low uptake and impacts, and inconsistency with govt’ policy, governments forced to enter CSR space. EU or UN organisations assume responsibility for defining global CSR standards and reporting mechanisms.
