Common Infectious Diseases Section 3 November 11, 2007

Statistically…. The number of school days missed each year in the United States due to the flu: 38 million The amount that is spent on medical costs and lost work each year in the United States because of food borne illnesses: $5 - $6 Billion The amount the United States spends each year to treat infectious disease: $120 Billion

Objectives 1. State why diseases affect everybody 2. Identify 2 bacterial diseases 3. Identify 2 viral diseases 4. List examples of fungal, protozoan, and parasitic infections 5. Name 2 organizations in your community that help prevent and treat the spread of infectious disease

Diseases Affect Everybody ! ! There are so many pathogens in so many places that it is impossible to avoid all of them. Most susceptible Young Elderly

What is our best defense…? To avoid behaviors that increase our chances of becoming infected. Remember…Prevention… before….Treatment

Common Bacterial Diseases Where are bacteria found?? Everywhere Dark, warm, moist places = our bodies Grow and multiply quickly Very common Take over our bodies

Common Bacterial Diseases pg. 330 Strep Throat Sinus Infection Food Poisoning – Salmonellosis Meningitis Tetanus

Common Viral Diseases You have probably acquired a few viral infections before. You probably have fought off some viral infections. Some are more serious than others…

Viral Infections – pg 332 Flu Cold Mumps Measles Mononucleosis Hepatitis SARS Others…

Mumps

Pandemic vs. Epidemic Epidemic: a classification of a disease that appears as new cases in a given human population, during a given period, at a rate that substantially exceeds what is "expected."classification of a disease Pandemic: an epidemic that spreads through human populations across a large region (for example a continent), or even worldwide.epidemic

Other Common Infections Fungal Infections Athlete’s Foot Jock Itch Ringworm Mostly live in warm, moist area Symptoms: itchy, red, lesions Prevention: Good Hygiene, Clothing Treatment: Over the counter, Doctor

Fungal Infections

Protozoan Infections Protozoa are most often found in water and soil. About 20,000 kinds of Protozoa exist, but only a small number of them cause disease.

Protozoan Infections Malaria: most widespread and serious Symptoms: fever, chills, headache, fatigue Transmission: mosquitoes Several millions people infected each year Apporx. One million die each year Amebic Dysentery: an inflammation of the intestine caused by an ameba. Symptoms: nausea, diarrhea, fever

Parasitic Infections Diseases caused by animal parasites Examples of parasites that live in body: Hookworms Flukes Pinworms Tapeworms

Parasitic Infections Examples of parasites on the body: Lice Leeches Ticks Fleas

Parasitic Infections

Transmission Infected Food Infected Drinking Water Infected Soil Bitten by Insects Treatment: Over the counter and prescription Medication

Traveling around the World Easier for diseases to spread Work together world wide CDC and NIH are working and watching out for disease daily. Prevent Treat Eliminate
