ANGLES

6MG2.1 Identify angles as vertical, adjacent, complementary, or supplementary and provide descriptions of these terms. Objective: Understand the different vocabulary terms used to describe angles. Learning target: Answer at least 3 of the 4 angle questions correctly on the exit ticket.

What is an angle? The amount of turn between two straight lines that have a common end point (the vertex)

How do we name angles? Sometimes, the angles will be numbered: In this figure, ∠4 is at the bottom left

What if the angles aren’t numbered? Use the letter of the vertex This is ∠B

What if there is more than one angle with the same vertex? Name the angle using three letters: The letter of a point on one side, the letter of the vertex, and the letter of a point on the other side. ∠1 could also be named ∠APC OR ∠CPA

Name the angle!

What are degrees? Units of angle measure. A full circle is divided into 360 degrees (360 ˚ )

What are the different types of angles? Can angle ever be more than one of these? For example, is there an angle that is both acute and right? Acute angles measure less than 90˚ Right angles measure exactly 90˚ Obtuse angles measure between 90˚ and 180˚ Straight angles measure exactly 180˚

What type of angle? Acute Obtuse

What type of angle? Acute Straight

What type of angle? Obtuse Right

What are the different types of multiple angles? Can an obtuse angle ever be part of a complementary angle pair? Why or why not? Adjacent angles are TWO angles that share a vertex and a side. Complementary angles are TWO angles that combine to 90˚ Supplementary angles are TWO angles that combine to 180˚

Direct Station You will use the whiteboards to draw your own angles (“Draw an acute angle and label its degrees” and “Draw two angles that are complementary”)

Collaborative Station You and your partner will play a guessing game. One partner will pick an angle from the picture and give hints so that the other partner can figure out which one it is. Example hints: “It is an acute angle. Its vertex is point E.” What to write down: The name of the angle AND the clues used to describe it. Example of what to write on your paper: Angle: ∠ AED Descriptions: Acute angle, vertex is point E

Independent Station You will switch to ST Math’s unit on volume (which we covered last week).
