Identity Wraps: Betye Saar Betye Saar, The Liberation of Aunt Jemima, 1972 Born 1926 Assemblage artist who challenges the notion of the "fine arts" in both the materials such as discarded objects or recycled materials that she uses in her sculptural collages. In several of her pieces, she challenges historical racial and gender stereotypes while asserting the power of African Americans. The Liberation of Aunt Jemima, for instance, subverts the "black mamie" stereotype of popular culture. Saar's Aunt Jemima wields a broom in one hand and a rifle in the other while standing over a self-portrait showing her clutching an infantilized white male. The focal point of the whole assemblage is the fist of the Black power symbol resting on a strip of kente cloth. Clothes/ Stereotypes

Protective Wraps: Betye Saar “I am intrigued with combining the remnant of memories, fragments of relics and ordinary objects, with the components of technology. It's a way of delving into the past and reaching into the future simultaneously. The art itself becomes the bridge.” Betye Saar, Betye Saar, Africa Her Studio Contained within something

Cultural Wraps: Faith Ringgold Born 1930 Faith Ringgold began as a painter but moved toward "soft" sculpture. Her signature pieces are quilt-like pieces inspired by Tibetan thirtankas. Attempts to connect art with craft. Ringgold's "quilts" are narratives of women's lives and the articulation of what it means to be a Black woman in America. Wedding Lovers Quilt, 1986 Quilts/ Warmth/ Protection

Brand Wraps: Andy Warhol Between 1962 and 1967 Warhol painted soup cans, both individually and in groups. The Gallery’s work titled 100 Cans is one of the last images he painted by hand before turning to silkscreen printing methods. Pencil lines are visible under the paint and the last row of cans at the bottom is cut off, suggesting endless stacks of cans. If you look closely, you will discover that each can is subtly different. hol.htmlwww.albrightknox.org/ArtStart/lWar hol.html 100 Cans, 1962 Oil on canvas, 72 x 52” (182.9 x cm.) Product Wraps: Ester Hernandez Born:1944 “Farm working provided me with my first opportunity as an artist to explore all of the raw organic materials around me. It was through my personal involvement with my family and community that I learned to nurture and develop a great respect for and interest in the arts. My mother carried on the family tradition of embroidery from her birthplace in North Central Mexico, my grandfather was a master carpenter who made religious sculpture in his spare time; and my father was an amateur photographer and visual artist.” Hernandez's most famous work, Sun Mad Raisins, a satirical manipulation of a well known logo, stands as a powerful commentary against the exploitation of farm laborers. Sun Mad Raisins Altered brands/ Political message

Unusual Wraps: Olivia Parker In the early 1990s Parker turned her attention to the computer, fusing her collage with the new digital era. Sculptural in presentation, the book takes on other meanings. As Parker states, "A closed book tempts me to open it. As it opens a book may release ideas the same way an open door releases light into a darkened room." Through her works, the viewer is invited into the shadows of Olivia Parker's imagination. A Book of Broken Rules (1994) A Heart Preserved in Fluid Escaping/ Breaking free Contained/ Preserved
