Course Overview This course presents an overview of interventions for young children with autism spectrum disorders and the strategies needed for teaching. Emphasis is placed on evidence-based interventions, with a review of non-research based interventions in order for students to become critical consumers of the literature related to autism intervention. Students will learn pedagogical foundations for best practice in instructional programming and curriculum development for young children with autism spectrum disorders.

Course Outcomes By the end of this course you should be able to : CE440-1: Analyze current issues and trends related to educational programming for individuals with autism spectrum disorders CE440-2: Develop instructional content for individuals with autism spectrum disorders in the developmental domains CE440-3: Compare strategies for social and behavioral skill development specific to the learning styles of young children with autism spectrum disorders

Next step in the field trip : Using this same webpage….click on the far left tab in yellow titled “Media Center.” On the web page you will find a link titled “About the National Standards Project.” (PDF file) Open the document and read about the 11 research-based strategies/interventions for children with autism that have been proven to be effective.

More discussion…. According to the National Standards Project, what are some of the effective strategies/interventions that can be used to treat children with autism ?

Unit 1 : Important Information A child with autism will benefit the most from early intervention services when they are intensive, direct, and individualized to fit their specific needs. When working with a child who has autism, it is important to know why a strategy or intervention will be used, and how to use it.

National Standards Report The National Standards Report launched by the National Autism Center, reviews 775 different research studies on treatments and interventions for children with autism. Out of the 775 studies : Established treatments are defined by the National Standards Report from the NAC as “interventions or treatments that have sufficient evidence of positive effect on the outcome of a child with autism” (NAC,2009).

National Standards Report Established Treatments *Comprehensive Behavioral Treatments *Pivotal Response Treatment *Schedules Unestablished Treatments *Gluten and Casein Free Diet *Sensory Integration Packages

We are off to a great start …. Do you have any questions?

Thank you! Remember as your instructor, I view your success as my success. If you need anything, please me. Have a super week!
