Example Title: Cheerio and Fruit Loop Place Value Grade Level: K-2 Objectives: to provide students with a concrete experience that will help them understand place value concepts Materials: cheerios, fruit loops, string, two paperclips, needles Activity: Following a place value discussion of 1’s, 10’s, and 100’s, have the children make their own place value necklaces. Have them string Cheerios to show they understand place value by having them string 9 cheerios and then 1 fruit loop. Every 10th piece must be a fruit loop. That way they will be able to count the place value of their necklaces as 10, 20, 30.
