Centers of Excellence in MCH To train graduate and post-graduate public health professionals in an interdisciplinary MCH setting To provide national leadership and to work, in partnership with states, communities, public-private partners, and families to strengthen the MCH infrastructure Purpose 6
MCH Academic Postdoctoral Enhancement To address the current challenges experienced by early career MCH doctoral graduates in pursuing academic career pathways To ensure a continuum of training and support that promotes long-term sustainability of the field of MCH in academia, research, and practice Purpose 7

MCH Academic Postdoctoral Enhancement Requirements Section only required if applicants are requesting supplemental funding for enhancement Provide background data on need Identify Director and qualifications for enhancement Describe curricula/experiences in postdoctoral placements of at least a 12- and no more than 24-month experience. At a minimum, two (2) fellows per year, unless program supports one (1) postdoctoral fellow, and a junior faculty member. Describe recruitment and retention of a diverse group of fellows Curriculum should hone analytic skills and support initiation of research projects in critical MCH areas 19
MCH Academic Postdoctoral Enhancement Requirements Section only required if applicants are applying for supplemental funding for enhancement Fellows must publish a minimum of two (2) peer-reviewed articles each year Provide mentorship to assist fellows in securing and transitioning to faculty positions Discuss collaboration between program postdoctoral fellows and other postdoctoral MCH research fellows Proposals may also discuss enhanced support for junior MCH faculty with respect to developing research agendas and linking efforts to MCH public health practice Budget- may be included here in the supplemental request or in the SF424A form. Total amount- $170,000 20
Budget – Support for students should be a significant portion of requested grant funds – Program must take a significant role regional and/or national matters – Applicants must include a general plan for developing and convening a Centers of Excellence in MCH grantee meeting at least once during the five-year project period. Meeting costs should not exceed $30,000 in the budget for that year. – The applicant may select any year to host the meeting. (Corresponds to RC 6 –”Support Requested”) 21
Budget – Up to $350,000 per year, per grant; up to additional $170,000 for an MCH Academic Postdoctoral Enhancement – Project Director of the grant must be a full-time faculty member and an Associate Professor or higher with demonstrated leadership, experience, and expertise in MCH Public Health – He/she must spend at least 25% effort on this project; may not be a shared position – Deans, department chairs, and others in similar positions may not serve as Project Director or core faculty, or receive payment from project funds, unless special permission from the MCHB Training program is obtained (Corresponds to RC 6 –”Support Requested”) 22
