IT GRAPHIC DESIGN SYLLABUS OVERVIEW Mrs. Sample

 “While students in art classes learn techniques specific to art, such as how to draw, how to mix paint, or how to center a pot, they’re also taught a remarkable array of mental habits not emphasized elsewhere in schools.” Lois Hetland and Ellen Winner (Educational researchers at Harvard’s Project Zero

Did you know that…  We live in a visual age. Most children and youth spend 10 hours per day in front of screens composed of pictures and words, often two types of screens at once.

Did you know that…  The arts provide jobs million Americans currently work in the visual arts. Jobs for artists and designers are predicted to increase by 43% by 2016.

Did you know that…  Art education equips students to form mental images, which can be used to solve problems-an ability that chemists, engineers, and architects use to create models and that inventors use to think up new ideas.  Art education requires students to use their eyes and hands to give form to ideas generated in the brain- a discipline that Nobel Prize winner Eric Kandel proved boosts brain power.

Course Description  Keep a comprehensive visual art journal  Graphic Design History….  We will study typography, layout, various media, and other visual art forms in relation to elements and principals of art and design  Not computer based, however we will be making projects based on graphic design concepts

Grading Policy  Students will receive 3 types of grades weighted with different percentages throughout the year:  Classwork / Quizzes = 20%  Homework = 20%  Projects / Tests = 60% Students will receive multiple grades per project

Grading Policy A ExceptionalC Average A ExcellentC Okay A Extremely GoodD Fair B Very GoodD – Below Average B GoodD – Danger Zone B DecentF 59& Below - Failing C High Average Art Department Grading Policy (PWCS is contained within, but the additional breakdown is for me to be able to better communicate with you)

Activity Busses / After School Help  I can stay after to help students one day a week until 3:00.  Students need to give me advance notice if they are planning on staying.  Afterschool Activity Busses run on Tuesday and Thursday starting in a few weeks.

Personal Device Policy  Students have to sign personal device contracts every time that they need to use an ipad, iphone, or mobile device for research.  Because this is not a computer based class, most of the research conducted will be via the textbook and at home computer.

School Fusion  Use this to keep up with homework, notes, and project expectations.  Rubrics, notes page requirements, and project expectations will also be posted here.  I will always update my fusion page according to each new unit of study.

Extra Credit  Will be given throughout the grading period for those students who HAVE TURNED IN ALL ASSIGNMENTS.  It will not replace missing assignments!

LATE WORK / MISSING WORK  Students are welcome to stay after school to make up missed work. (from excused absenses)  Students will be given 2 days to make up assignments for a late grade.  Assignments will be marked down a letter grade per day that they are not handed in.  After two days of not handing in an assignment the student will be given a zero.  Students cannot turn in work from a previous grading period.

Class Supplies  Graphic Design REQUIRED ART SUPPLIES  These are due by September 8 th 2015  8” X 10”Sketchbook (hardcover with sewn binding is preferred – you can purchase these at Michaels, A.C. Moore, or Barnes and Noble we also have them in the school book store for $10)  Drawing pencils: 2H, HB, 4B- must have at least these although you can purchase the set  Handheld pencil sharpener  Erasers: gum eraser and hard white (no pink please!)  Set of colored pencils: optional  SEVERAL ultra fine and fine BLACK sharpies ( we use these frequently and do not have extras)  2 blending stumps  1 short handled detail brush (1, 0, 00- look on the handle or package for size)  At least 2 glue sticks  A zipper bag to hold art supplies  I recommend that students bring a small container of hand sanitizer to use before or after class.
