The Olmec & The Maya With the use of farming, Civilizations were able to grow. –Olmec (500 B.C.) lived along the Gulf of Mexico Had rich farming, but were known for being traders –Often traded with inland peoples –Used the rivers as trade highways Lasted until about A.D. 300 –Taken over by inland tribes The Maya - inland tribe –Built large civilization on the Yucatan Peninsula They were also traders Mysteriously disappeared

The Aztecs & The Inca The Aztecs civilization took the place of the Toltec, who came after the Maya. –They controlled the region that we now know as Mexico The Aztecs took control of the trade that the Toltec had controlled. Further South, the Moche lived in Peru (S. America) –They were excellent farmers Well known for their artwork. The other large group in the area were the Inca –Lived in the Andes Mountains
