Critical thinking: how do you get what you want? College Prep

Butterfly in the sky, I can go twice as high Read “In Conclusion”

Yes…More Criteria Here we go

Lets practice, combo style You will need: – Hook types – Conclusion knowledge – AND….whats the one think you want up poop creek? That’s right…a RAFT.

Answer these questions….remember?!?!?!? Role: “What is your role?” – Or, “Who are you to these people?” “What are these people going to think about you before you start?” Audience: “Who are you talking to?” – Or, “What do these people want to hear?” Format: “What kind of writing are you doing?” – Or,…yeah that’s pretty much it. Topic: “What is the main idea?” – Or, “What are you trying to get?”

Your job I am going to give you scenarios You are going to: – 1) RAFT it – 2) Hook (one of our kinds of hooks) – 3) convincing reasons – 4) POWERFUL concluding sentence (appeal to the universal element that would work for the audience) Write these on an exit ticket and be prepared to present…as always, there will be rewards (my favorite kind)

Example You are my boss I want a raise R: Employee – My boss knows I work hard A: My boss – He wants a logical (logos) argument because he has to spend the money to keep me, therefore he needs GOOD reasons to keep me. – He is also a caring person…he cares about his employees F: Conversation T: Mo money mo money mo money

EXAMPLE CONT. Hook (“start with a dilemma”): “My daughter just got into Harvard but I can’t afford it, so she might have to go to Martin State.” (because he is caring) Reasons: – I get here an hour early everyday – I stay late – My lesson plans are amazing because they are so intricate.) Conclusion: (“Love”):”I love little Dejaney so much, I want her to have all the opportunities I didn’t.”

Scenario #1 I am your dad (real dad, not school dad) You want to go out on Saturday night…(Topic) – Who are you to me? What do I already know about you? – What does your dad want to hear? – What is our format? – What do you want?

Share out!!! Steps: – 1) Share RAFT info – 2) Hook – 3) Compelling reasons (details) – 4) Concluding sentence

Heads down I am going to say everyone’s name who tried to convince dad Hands up for who you think did the best job of convincing (pretend you’re the parent)

Scenario #2 I am college entrance person… You want to get into my college

Heads down I am going to say everyone’s name who tried to convince dad Hands up for who you think did the best job of convincing (pretend you’re the parent)

Scenario # 3 I am Wu Tang Clan. You want to be a member

Heads down I am going to say everyone’s name who tried to convince dad Hands up for who you think did the best job of convincing (pretend you’re the parent)

Scenario #4 I am the Denver Nuggets, its game 7 of the NBA finals. You are George Karl, you want me to be motivated

Heads down I am going to say everyone’s name who tried to convince dad Hands up for who you think did the best job of convincing (pretend you’re the parent)

Scenario #5 I am your teacher You are my TA, convince me to pass you (you are always late, mouth off, and causally swear)

Heads down I am going to say everyone’s name who tried to convince dad Hands up for who you think did the best job of convincing (pretend you’re the parent)

Now On paper… For your alcohol testing mini-essays… PRETEND: Dr. Calhoun wants to implement this policy. RAFT it. Then write your hooks (and intros) AND concluding sentences (and conclusion paragraph) DUE: Tomorry
