Intel’s 3D Transistor BENJAMIN BAKER

Where we are headed  What is a transistor?  What it is and what does it do?  Moore’s Law  Who is Moore and what is his law?  Intel’s New Architecture for a 3-D transistor  Explain what the new architecture is and why it is better than what is used today.

Brief Transistor History  Before transistors were invented, vacuum tubes were used.  These vacuum tubes are also called thermionic valves  Transistors were first introduced in  In 1947, experiments were observed on new transistor technologies.  The first commercial working transistor was made in 1954.

Why are they important?  Transistors are used in practically all electronic devices  It is considered to be one of the greatest inventions of the 20 th century  Integrated Circuit – a set of electronic circuits on a microchip

What does it do?  A logic gate is a physical device that implements a Boolean function.  A transistor is used as an amplifier  A transistor can be used as a switch

How a transistor works

Moore’s Law  Named after Gordon E. Moore.  States that the number of transistors on integrated circuits doubles every two years.  Intel often quotes this as 18 months.  It is really not considered a “law”  Sources in 2005 say it is expected to continue until 2015 up to 2020.

Today’s transistor

Intel’s New Transistor Architecture  Specs:  Transistors will run on a 22nm microprocessor  Transistors are tri-gate  The first chip to use these transistors is called “Ivy Bridge”

New Transistors Has a three sided fin 50% power reduction at constant performance 37% performance increase at a low voltage Improved performance and energy efficiency due to more control over the gate

Intel’s Plan  This new architecture will  allow more energy efficient technology  Faster computing due to increased control and smaller transistors  Will bring in a new era of computing  Supercomputers  Laptops  Smartphones

What we went over  Transistor history and function  Moore’s Law and who Moore is  What our current transistors look like  Why 3-D transistors are better  Intel’s plan for the future.
