Innovation Initiative Updates The purpose of the initiative is to make UNC the “go to” place to partner with innovative minds by ▫creating supportive campus cultures that reward and incentivize translational efforts; ▫valuing partnerships and consider them with strategy and holistic thinking; ▫doing “tech transfer” differently, in terms of practices that move innovations forward and out quickly while valuing individuals and partners involved. Pilot Campuses: ECU UNC-CH UNCC UNCG WCU Phase I: October 2009 through September 2010

Innovation Initiative Updates What are campus teams doing that relates to SPARC? ▫Identifying areas of research strength – assist in building and/or supporting campus strategy ▫Inventorying efforts/programs that support entrepreneurial faculty – share best practices/resources that prepare faculty to work in start-ups and deal with conflict of interest, etc ▫Making negotiations simpler and faster –adopt or support standard agreements (like Carolina Express License), standard trainings in contracts and contract negotiations

Goal ▫Stimulate, direct and achieve commercialization opportunities at UNC campuses, particularly those lacking internal capacity Features ▫Campus visits to build relationships and culture ▫Process to “adopt” innovations within UNC and see them through to positive outcomes ▫Engagement of key external stakeholder network 6 UNC ACTION: Accelerating Commercialization and Transfer – Innovation Opportunity Network

REACH-NC What is it? ▫A portal to information about UNC expertise and capabilities How is it being built? ▫Data on faculty publications, research, courses, IP, and more are used to build an expertise profile that is searchable within a taxonomic framework An example from biomed fields using publication data:

REACH-NC Enhancing REACH through Visualization Multiple audiences – faculty, administrators, economic developers, industry, legislators Implications – data access, data collection, strategic management of the tool April Basic functionality available using NCSU/UNCCH data May Early visualization work May-July 2010 – Stakeholder focus groups September 2010 – Prototype unveiled October 2010 and ongoing – Seek and secure resources to expand tool systemwide

Implementation Update Bare bones campuses coming online between now and June 2010 ▫WSSU, FSU, ECSU, UNCA, UNCP, NCCU Technical resource through UNC-CH to support systemwide RAMSeS users Upcoming priorities ▫IRBIS ▫ACAP ▫Attention on Conflict of Interest and Blue (IP management) modules through innovation initiative eForms feature will allow easy update and customization

Configuration and Change Management What is it? ▫A new process to request changes regarding RAMSeS features and functionality, unless  You can make the change yourself in Backbone or Research Contacts (adding/removing people or units, approver roles, etc.)  You have a “troubleshooting” issue while using the tool (correcting mistakes in numbers, status, dates, etc.) and can use the online help system to resolve it What types of changes fall under this process? Level 1: Data elements core to the tool and standard to all campus instances of RAMSeS Level 2: Changes recommended by UNC-CH ORIS Level 3: Other changes to data fields or text (if not a Level 1 field), adding sponsors

Configuration and Change Management Why do we need this process? ▫Ensure standard practices remain intact for key data elements  Maintains confidence in systemwide reporting ▫Allow systemwide adoption of campus ideas for change or improvement, as appropriate  Allows parallel growth across system ▫Provide transparent prioritization and scheduling of change requests

Configuration and Change Management How will it work? Each campus elects a Standards Advisory Board (SAB) representative Any campus (usually through SAB member) can request a change; simple online form for change requests is being developed through UNC GA website Levels 1 and 2 change requests are reviewed and approved by the full SAB. Level 3 requests can be addressed by the Change Manager Change Request Made by Campus Request Reviewed by Change Manager Level 1 and 2 Requests Reviewed by SAB Approved Requests Implemented on Campuses Change Resolved: Change Manager and Requestor Notified Rejected by SAB; Back to Requestor Level 3 Requests Reviewed by Change Manager Approved Requests Implemented on Campus(es) Change Resolved: Change Manager and Requestor Notified Rejected by Change Manager; Back to Requestor
