Thornhill School News Issue 2 Fri 14 th Sept News from Miss Clark News from Mrs Colley SCHOOLSCHOOL This Week Future Events Fri 28th Sept Macmillan Coffee morning 10am Fri 3rd Oct Community Day Next Week Mon - Sports’ club (£1) yr 5 & 6 Football/netball at WLA Tues - Netball Wed - Dance club Thurs- Recorder club Friday - Youth Club- Sport’s Challenge ( £1) News from Mrs Figes (Let’s talk is a focus for talk in and out of school. Pupils are expected to ask relatives and friends and to share their own views, with confidence) How are we changing every day? Let’s Talk…. Attendance: 94.1% Mon- Sport’s club Tues- Friends Meeting 6pm Zumba class every Wednesday pm in the school hall This week we have looked at the effect of The Blitz during world war two. We have explored the Blackout, how it made life more dangerous and restrictive. We have also looked at different methods of sheltering from bombing: Anderson and Morrison shelters. We imagined we were sheltering from a bombing raid during our big write task on Friday. The children have worked hard this week and particularly enjoyed rating different breads and spreads, then designing, making and of course eating a sandwich. Next week we will be multiplying in maths and making food hygiene posters in DT. We continue our RE by looking at British Muslims and the Hajj. In Science we will be separating mixtures and looking at the varying properties and uses of different materials. This week in Literacy we have spent time looking at sentence captions. We now know that we can use a sentence caption to describe a picture or object. The Year 1s and 2s wrote some sentence captions as part of our ‘Big Write’. We went on a listening walk around school on Thursday. Ask your child to tell you what we heard.

Monday Sports Club Before the holidays I was able to secure a marvellous opportunity for our pupils, to help them become the Olympians of the future. This school has had a reputation for doing well at sport, but also for sportsmanship and the effort all pupils put in to physical activities. In order to support this, I have been able to secure a professional sports coach to run training for all pupils after school on Mondays. The training will be in a variety of sports through-out the year, including Rugby and football skills, using gym equipment, tennis and hockey. Pupils only need to pay £1 for each session which lasts until 4pm. The Friends of School are funding the remainder of the cost in order to ensure it is accessible for all pupils. I hope all parents will realise what an opportunity this is for their child. The first session will took place on Monday 10 th September. Pupils will need a PE Kit. Reminders Please remember to pay dinner monies at the beginning of every week as this really helps Mrs Toman. Please remember PE kits as we don’t have a great deal to spare. Please remember your responses to July’s parent questionnaire. Youth Club Our popular Youth Club will start next Friday after school. This club has raised a great deal of money for school funds, enabling the ‘Friends of School’ to buy the new blinds for the hall, sports equipment, to fund school buses for trips and helps to subsidise sports coaches in school. Entry is £1 and there are food and drinks to buy. Every week will have a special theme. The club starts at 3.30 until 5pm. Please collect all Key Stage One children.
