Jane Goodall The Real Way to Go Apes

Background  Born: April 3 rd 1934 in London, England  Still alive today at age 81  She received an education at Cambridge University  8 th person to receive PhD from Cambridge without a baccalaureate (in Ethology 1965)  Worked as Secretary, starting at Oxford, in order to pay for a trip to Africa  Became TV sensation with Miss Goodall and the Wild Chimpanzees

Contributions  Goodall coined a phrase “the banana club” which was a systematic feeding method she used to gain the trust of the chimpanzees  Goodall was key in understanding the complex social systems and intelligence of these primates (ie: tools, comforting, and language)  She wrote books (Through the Window), spoke at seminars & meetings, and actively advocates for ecologically responsible action and humane treatment of chimpanzees.

Back to APES  Jane Goodall relates to our class in her belief that human actions are all part of the interconnected system.  Our impact on the world through pollution and habitat destruction can harm the important and amazing socially structure of chimpanzees.
