Definition of ‘drug.’ A drug is: Any substance which, when taken into the body, affects the chemical composition of the body and how the body functions. Title: What is a drug? How do we categorise drugs? Learning outcomes: All: Identify drugs which are legal and illegal Most: Consider the different ways drugs can be categorised. Some: Begin to synthesise opinions on the different categories

Using the cards on your table create two piles: Legal Illegal

LegalIllegal CaffeineCocaine TobaccoHeroin AlcoholAnabolic Steroids GlueAmphetamine GasCannabis TranquilisersEcstasy AspirinCrack Cocaine Magic Mushrooms*Methadrone* Opium LSD

How else can you categorise the drugs on your table?

There are four different groups of drugs whether legal or illegal. Analgesics (pain killers) Hallucinogens (have visions or hallucinations) Stimulants (uppers) Depressants (downers) Try to put your list of drugs into these four groups

DepressantsStimulants Hallucinogens Analgesics Ecstasy Crack Cocaine Cocaine Tobacco Methadrone Amphetamines Glue and Gas Caffeine Anabolic Steroids Alcohol Tranquilisers Cannabis Opium Heroin Aspirin LSD Magic Mushrooms Ecstasy

Hallucinogens Facts Examples; LSD, magic mushrooms and ecstasy. They have powerful mind- altering effects and cause people to see and hear things that are not there (hallucinate). The law LSD is a Class A drug, it is illegal. Possession can lead to 7 years in jail. The maximum sentence for supplying hallucinogens is life imprisonment and an unlimited fine. The risks “Trips” or hallucinations can sometimes have very frightening effects. Taking hallucinogens when in a bad mood has been known to make people harm themselves.

Depressants Facts The law lt is legal for anyone over the age of 18 to buy alcohol. Cannabis is a class C drug. If you are found with an amount with the intent to supply you can face 2 years in prison, an unlimited fine - or both! The risks Examples; alcohol and cannabis Can slow down the nervous system causing sleepiness and forgetfulness Highly addictive. Depressants are often ‘social’ drugs. Cannabis is linked to symptoms of paranoia and can lead to complications in the brain.

Stimulants Facts Examples; ecstasy, cocaine and caffeine Speed up the activity of the nervous system. Increase feelings of well-being, and increase energy and alertness. The law Can be legal (caffeine) or illegal (cocaine) Carries various penalities dependant on the classificication of the drug. The risks Highly addictive because of the way they enhance the mood of drug users. Psychological effects. If stopped, the body ‘crashes’ users can become depressed, nervous and suicidal.

Analgesics Facts Examples; heroin and aspirin. Pain killers block nerve impulses. They reduce the pain felt and for this reason become very addictive. The law Class A drugs are considered the most harmful and/or addictive. They carry heavy prison sentences and unlimited fines for possession. The risks Highly addictive as they block pain. This can lead to poor judgement of risky situations. Heroin is often sold as a mixture of containing other substances.
