Unit 1:Plot, Setting & Mood Essay Prompt Write an expository essay explaining why literature from two different cultures would share a similar archetypal situation of God /gods destroying humanity by flood. What does water archetypally symbolize? Why? Discuss the difference between real floods and the “Biblical Flood Archetype” in your response.

Essay Guide Essay Guide: The Structure You Will Be Graded On introduction 1.Write an introduction paragraph that answers the prompt directly. 3-5 SENTENCES a.Sentence 1 = hook (opening question, quote, startling statement) b.Sentence 2 – 3 = context (explain how the hook connects to your answer to the prompt) c.Sentence 4 = thesis statement (one sentence answer to ALL parts of the prompt) body 2.Write a body paragraph that explain your answer. 3-5 SENTENCES a.Sentence 1 = the topic sentence / point of this paragraph b.Sentences 2-3 = examples from the texts that support the topic sentence c.Sentences 4 – 5 = explanation about how this paragraph & examples support your overall thesis conclusion 3.Write a conclusion paragraph that sums up your answer to the prompt. 3-5 SENTENCES a.Sentence 1 = restate your answer to all parts of the prompt b.Sentences 2-3 = re-explain the context for your answer in terms of what the prompt is asking c.Sentences 4-5 = closing (remind us about the hook using different words / show us how this applied to your response)

PRACTICE: DRAFT A RESPONSE TO THE PROMPT 1.USE YOUR NOTES 2.USE THE TEXTS (GENESIS, GILGAMESH, OHIO FLOOD) 3.USE THE ESSAY FORMAT GUIDE 4.WRITE A RESPONSE TO THE PROMPT a.IN A MINIMUM OF THREE PARAGRAPHS (INTRO, BODY, CONCLUSION) b.WITH A THESIS STATEMENT AS THE LAST SENTENCE OF PARAGRAPH 1.

Name(s)_______ Block_______ Date_______ Unit 1 Essay: DRAFT This is the first sentence of your essay. It should hook the reader’s attention, and it should not be your thesis statement. The next sentences need to explain your hook and set the context for your answer to the prompt. The last sentence of the introduction is your answer to the essay prompt. It should only be one sentence. The first sentence of your body paragraph should be a topic sentence directly stating the point of this paragraph. The next sentence should be an example from the text illustrating this point. This example should be followed by a “direct quote” (Genesis 6:14) from the text further illustrating your point. All direct quotes should be followed by a citation of the author’s last name and page or line number where the quote can be found. Follow the quote with your own words explaining what the quote means and how it is an example of your point. Include as many quotes, examples, and explanations as needed to completely explain your point. Be EXAUSTIVE. Leave nothing out. As this essay has shown, this sentence should be a restatement of your thesis. Do not begin with “in conclusion” and do not restate your thesis word for word from the intro. Remind the audience about the larger context for your response. Close with a strong final thought that reminds the audience about your opening hook.
