PLEASE TURN IN YOUR ROOTS HOMEWORK TO THE BIN! MAKE SURE YOUR NAME IS ON THE TOP! THEN, PLEASE TAKE OUT YOUR BOOK TALK GUIDE AND, IF YOU ARE PRESENTING, YOUR RUBRIC AND OUTLINE! Do Now:

Students will be able to define unknown vocabulary words by using roots, prefixes, and context clues. Students will be able to understand the changing views of women through text by looking at two different texts across centuries and analyzing stereotypes/concepts. 1. Do Now: Homework Submission (5 min) 2. Editing Tips/Paragraph Rewrites (5 min) 3. FOAs (35-40 min) 4. Comparing Texts: Begin Group Work (20 min) Today’s Objectives and Agenda

STOP MAKING THESE ERRORS!  Please put book titles in either italics OR underline it!  Please put commas after introductory words and phrases! ● Example: Today, we are going to learn how to use commas after introductory words.  Always proofread your paper before you submit it! Alaways! (  See how silly that looks?)  Put your paper in MLA Format: Heading in upper left-hand corner, title centered (no bold or underline), 1” margins, 12 pt. font, Times New Roman  Please, add variety to the beginning of your sentences. There is never a reason to start all of your sentences with “the” or “this.” Because you can, switch around the order of your clauses. Even better, add transitions!  Steer clear of words like “this” and “that” and “it” and “what.” These are scary because we do not know what they are…  BE CONCISE.  Spell out all contractions in formal writing. DO NOT be lazy! ● Please write in complete sentences. We know what those are by now!

 Editing is an integral part of the writing process. Once a paper is edited, it can always improve!  Using your FOUR novel paragraphs, choose the paragraph that you are the most proud of and REWRITE that paragraph using your edits and suggestions.  Please keep in mind that not all mistakes may have been caught…we are all human! You must reread over your paragraph multiple times to ensure that it is 100% to your liking.  Your final draft (typed in MLA format) and printed is due by Tuesday, February 10 th —I am giving you multiple days because your homework in here has been stacked trying to play catch up!  ROOT QUIZ FRIDAY! Root, Root, Root for the Home Team! Homework

FOAs ● Please make sure you are rating each book as you go along! ● Get a good feel for what you would like to read next!

Heroines Before the 18 th Century How are they often viewed in literature and movies?

Heroines in the 20 th Century Progression in media/literature?

Heroines in the 21 st Century

Formal Comparison Compare the following texts: ● How the Good Wife Taught Her Daughter- a 14 th century “ conduct” poem that was popular in the middle ages (you will have to navigate through the dialect and language which is specific to the time period---see if any of the words and phrases have remained the same) ● The Good House Wife's Guide from a 1950's home economics textbook intended for high school girls Tasks: 1. Highlight key words/phrases that depict the values/attitudes placed on women. 2. Provide commentary in the margins in regards to what you have highlighted or discussed within your groups. 3. Create a Venn diagram comparison chart that compares and contrasts the two literary pieces and the attitudes/values placed on women today. Answer the question: What are some of the expectations of women from each time period?
