SC21 & Subsea Materials Bruce Witwer - SC17 Materials Liaison

API SC21 Next meeting January 20 th, 2016 Chair: Rob Hilts New agenda items Continuous Cast Ductile Iron Bar DNVGL-RP-0034

DNV GL RP-0034 Steel Forgings for Subsea Applications First Edition February 2015 Now in revision for 2 nd edition

DNV GL RP-0034 Steel Forgings for Subsea Applications Objectives: Provide an internationally acceptable and harmonized standard for steel forgings Provide for reduced lead time, stock keeping and interchangeability Provide consistent quality to increase reliability/integrity of subsea equipment Simplify the risk assessment process Serve as a contractual reference document between Manufacturers and Purchasers Serve as a guideline for designers, suppliers, purchasers and regulators Compliment existing industry codes for subsea equipment

DNV GL RP-0034 General Material grades covered are: Carbon steels Micro-alloyed steels Low Alloy steels, and their modified grades, as per material groups 1 and 2 in API 20B. Three steel forging classes (SFC) designated SFC1, SFC2, and SFC3 Define different levels of forged product technical, quality and qualification requirements All classes are intended for equipment that shall meet PSL-3 requirements SFC 1 - intended for less critical components, e.g. components that are not subjected to continuous exposure to flowing hydrocarbons or components with simple shapes SFC 2 - intended for pressure containing and/or load bearing components that are of significant enough size and complexity to warrant additional mechanical testing and surveillance SFC 3 - intended for fatigue sensitive pressure containing and/or load bearing components Quality Assurance Protocols TBD in 2 nd edition Qualification of suppliers, forgings and surveillance during production Chemistry Requirements Sulfur (0.005% max) Phosphorous (0.010% max)

DNV GL RP-0034 Forging Operations 6:1 reduction requirement* Initial free upsets do not count toward reduction ratio Punching or piercing operation of rings not included in reduction ratio Heat Treatment No stacking of SFC 3 forgings Material Testing Test material for all classes to be sacrificial forgings or prolongations L and T samples at 1/2T for thickness under 4 in., L and T samples at 1/2T & 1/4T for over 4 in. (potential to increase QTC testing by 4X’s) CVN testing in inverse relationship and does not address material > 95ksi yield For 75ksi and less – 37 ft-lb average, 28 ft-lb single For 75ksi to 85ksi – 44 ft-lb average, 33 ft-lb single For 85ksi to 95ksi – 52 ft-lb average, 39 ft-lb single MPQ (first article) required for all SFC 2 & SFC 3 forgings

DNV GL RP-0034 vs. API 20B RP B Defines Steel Forging Classes (SFC) 1 to 3Defines Forging Specification Levels (FSL) 1 to 4 Reduction ratio of 4:1 minimumReduction ratio of 3:1 minimum Open die or ring rollingOpen die, closed die or ring rolling SFC-specific qualification requirementsFSL-specific qualification requirements Informative reference in 17A 5 th edition draftInformative reference in 6A 21 st edition draft Dissimilar hardness testing requirements Dissimilar NDE requirements on forgings Dissimilar forging qualification variables

DNV GL RP-0034 Next workshop will be in Houston 5th -7th of April 2016 Contact Morten Ro Helsem - How wide-spread is the document? E.g. SC6, SC16, SC20, SC21, etc. How is it applied? 1.Relevant API documents make reference to the RP (DNV GL preferred)? 2.API adopts the language of the RP?
