How did the idea of democracy evolve in ancient Greece?  Over the next few days, we will learn about 4 different types of government and how the existed in ancient Greece.  First, let’s trim and glue the graphic organizer onto page 7 of Unit 4 INB

How did the idea of democracy evolve in ancient Greece?  Now let’s read about Monarchy.  Now, let’s experience the rule of Monarchy in our class room.  Then, take these notes

How was this form of government practiced in Ancient Greece?  Monarchy: in 2000 BC, the Mycenaean voted in the 1 st king; land owners voted him in as king. The future kings inherited their position. The king had ALL the power. People paid taxes to the king

Why did this form of government decline in ancient Greece?  The aristocrats were rich land owners who were tight with the king. Overtime, they wanted more power but the king said “No”, so eventually they over threw the king.

How did the idea of democracy evolve in ancient Greece?  Now, let’s read about Oligarchy  Let’s experience oligarchy in the classroom  Take the notes

How was Oligarchy practiced in ancient Greece?  A small group of rich people ruled the area. They used slaves to do all the work. They created laws that made them richer and the poor became poorer. Soldiers were used to enforce the laws.

Why did this form of government decline in ancient Greece?  Harsh rulers set them up for citizen upset and revolution. The peasant population grew larger and they used the strong soldiers to overthrow the oligarchy.

Summary for today  On a half sheet of paper, write about which government you would have liked to lived under and why.
