For Reception and Year 1 Parents 3 of 3 sessions

Any questions from last time?

In this sessions we will include: Any queries from the past 2 sessions Activities to help with spellings Nonsense words A selection of phonics games The importance of reading at home The year 1 reading screening A list of resources you can use

Spellings – the booklet is now on the school website Look. Cover. Check Motor memory Phoneme frames (more to come later) Spelling booklet – activities -Headlines -That’s an Order -Super Sentences -Rainbow Words -Bubble Letters -Make a word search -Magnetic Letters

What a Load of Nonsense When you know all of the sounds you can sound out anything! jeg wint kly lun groiks fowspring

Why Nonsense Words? children just decode and say what they see – may be more than 1 possibility ensures decoding is being used, no other strategies most reliable way to assess phonetic knowledge important they know it is nonsense and doesn’t have to make sense. - Is it real? Does it make sense? Can you put it into a sentence?

Now it’s your turn! Real or non-sense?

Phoneme Frames Great for learning your sounds and how to apply them Help with spellings Use with Freddy Fingers church

Phoneme Frames church ch

Phoneme Frames church ch ur

Phoneme Frames church ch ur ch

Now it’s your turn Play sound hangman using a phoneme frame. Extension – can you write a sentence underneath with the word in it?

The Importance of Reading at Home Research shows that a child should read at home. Reading to your child is just as important! It doesn’t just have to be books... Going back to the simple view of reading – it’s more than just sounding out. Read their reading book? -Look at other materials -Discuss the book: favourite page/character -Phonics detective! What you write can really help.

Examples of comprehension questions. It’s not as scary as it sounds! -What is your favourite page and why? -Who is your favourite character why? Draw them. -How do you think X is feeling? Why? -Why did they do that? -How else could the story finish? -If the story kept going what would happen next?

Reading Records It is so important that you let us know when what and how your child is reading at home! E.g. -Let us know everything they have done e.g. phonics games -We know to change their books -Makes us aware if it is a confidence issue e.g. are they showing a skill at home and not at school? -Highlights an area that your child needs more practise with.

The Year 1 Reading Screening Beginning of June – date to follow (wc 16 th June??) 20 non-sense words 20 real words Spanning the 5 phases 32/40 is the pass mark Re-sit the following year Please take a look at last years booklet.

Further Sessions We are offering a 4 th session to follow up these phonics sessions. It will be with your child in class where you can practise what you have learnt by playing some on the games with your child. Date to be confirmed
