My UTOPIA Quickwrite: What problems or challenges do you think exist in the world today? What would a perfect society/ your perfect world look like?

The Giver Quickwrite: At this point in the story, why would Jonas’s community be considered a utopia? Do you consider it to be a utopia? Explain.

QUICKWRITE  What does the Chief Elder say about the last Receiver of Memory? What do you think happened?  How do you think the qualities that Jonas possesses will assist him in his new position?

The Giver Before Reading (115) Why do you think people ban books? Banning books is a violation of what Constitutional Amendment? Explain. After Reading (116) Explain why books are an important part of our society. Which values do they symbolize? How would our society be different if we no longer had freedom of the press? Connection to The Giver Complete questions 5 and 6 on pg. 116.

WARM-UP Grammar Review: Punctuate the following titles correctly. 1. In the short story, “Harrison Bergeron”, theme is revealed through the character’s actions, conversations, and direct dialogue. 2. What was the purpose for including the article “Banned Books Week: Celebrating the Freedom to Read” in this unit? 3. In the novel The Giver, the community must follow a strict set of rules and laws. Vocabulary practice 1. Like all good fiction, this novel has a true dialectic about how the creation of a utopia leads to a dystopian society. What does this mean? 2. After the police investigated the case of the vandalized classroom, the Pirate students were exculpated. Would they serve jail time for the crime? Explain.

Fishbowl  Topic: Fishbowl: Rules and Laws in a Utopian/Dystopian Society

Discover a Memory  Describe a memory you have from your past. Complete the sensory details chart before writing a brief, descriptive paragraph.  Memory descriptions should have a beginning, a middle, and an end and include both sensory details and figurative language.  Why is the memory’s significance?

Homework: Chapters  Find 2 additional quotes that reflect a change in Jonas’s character that results from conflict with the dystopian society.

Release  Why do you think Jonas’s father does not react to release in the same way as Jonas?  Why is Jonas and his father’s conflicting perspectives on release crucial in Jonas’ journey and the plot?  Why do you think Lowry chose the word “release” to represent how the community describes death?

Characterization Compare/Contrast: In what ways has Jonas changed since the beginning of the story? What conflicts or truths about his society have helped to make these changes?
