Presentation transcript:

What is matter? Everything that has mass and takes up Space.

Then what is mass? The amount of matter making up an object. Mass is measured by using a triple beam balance by comparing a mass that we know with one that we do not know.

What is volume? The amount of 3 dimensional space an object can hold. How much space an object takes up

What is Density? Density: How tightly or loosely atoms are compacted into a space. High Density Low Density

What does matter look like? SOLID Atoms that don't have much energy tend to stay in place and form a solid. They are not compressible. A solid has a definite size and shape. Atoms in a solid have some thermal energy so they vibrate or jiggle but do not move from place to place.

Matter in a solid state A table has a solid shape. Molecules or atoms in a solid are lined up in a regular pattern and have a definite shape and volume. Have a High Density.

Matter as a liquid The atoms or molecules of a liquid touch so density is close to a solid, but flow freely over each other. Because particles can move freely, they take the shape of their container and have definite volume.

Matter as a gas The molecules or atoms of a gas move more rapidly and are farther apart so they do not touch. Low Density. A gas can take the shape of its container and fill the volume of its container. If a gas is transferred from a small container to a large container, the molecules will spread out until they fill the larger container.

Phase Change A compound or element can move from one state to another, but is still the same substance. A Phase Change is a physical change from one state of matter to another by adding or taking away heat.

How can this happen? The answer lies in the motion of the particles in matter. If a physical force such as temperature changes, the state can change. If thermal energy (heat), in the form of temperature causes a disorderly motion of particles. If energy (temperature) is taken away, particles move slower. If added, particles move faster.energy Watch this example: of_matter/

Let’s see if this will help! r/solids-liquids-gases.htm Study Jam Solids, Liquids Gases

States of Matter States of Matter are also known as Phases of Matter. Particles are tiny bits of matter. Liquid Gas

What is Thermal Energy? Thermal Energy is energy created by the disorderly movement of the atoms or particles that make-up matter in the form of heat. Thermal energy can cause both a physical and a chemical change.

Spread out with Heat More Heat equals More Motion equals More Space between particles

What is a thermometer? A thermometer is a tool that we use to measure the amount of heat in matter.

Substance Stays the Same Most substances exist as a solid, liquid and a gas. The substance uses heat to move through the phases, but the substance itself stays the same.
