Intro Chemistry Notes Feb 3 Write all info in the green font

Chemistry  Study of matter and its properties

Matter  Anything that has mass and takes up space  Everything in the universe is either matter or energy

Properties of matter  Physical Properties - properties you can test for or sense without changing the substance  Examples: densitycolor malleability pHmagnetism boiling point melting point shape conductivity ability to dissolve

Physical changes  A Change in which a substance changes its physical properties without changing its chemical make up. Examples Cutting, tearing, melting, boiling, bending, dissolving

 Chemical properties – property in which you test how it reacts with another substance Examples:  Reactions creating bubbles  Flammability

Chemical Changes  A change in which a substance changes its chemical make up by reacting with something else Examples: Burning, making bubbles Also called a chemical reaction  Ways to identify chemical changes:  Color change  Precipitate forms – mix two liquids and get a solid  Mass changes

State of Matter  EVERYTHING can exist as a gas, solid, liquid or plasma  Change the state by adding heat or energy  Physical change!!

Solid  Particles are close to one another and don’t slide past each other  Fixed shape  High density  Doesn’t fill container necessarily

Liquid  Particles can slide past each other  Can fill and takes shape of a container  Medium density  Slightly compressible

Gases  Particles are far apart and moving fast  Always completely fills container  Takes shape of container  Low density

Plasma  Particles are very far apart and start to lose electrons and are moving very fast
