Medals and other rewards Florence Nightingale was an English nurse who became a national heroine during the Crimean War when she set up a hospital for soldiers. She became known as the 'Lady with the Lamp' because she used to walk round the hospital in the evening with a lamp, to check that everything was in order. She made nursing a profession and a respectable job for women. In 1912 the International Red Cross League established the Florence Nightingale Medal as the highest international award to nurses.

Wax figures We can see wax figures of many famous people in Madam Tussaud’s gallery. Madame Tussaud was born in France two hundred years ago, but became famous in England because she made wax figures and opened a gallery.

Money In Britain new banknotes have been introduced. The Queen is still on one side. And on the other side of them are famous people of Britain. On the new ten pound banknote the other side shows Charles Dickens and twenty pound - Michael Faraday. Charles Dickens (1812 – 1870) – one of the greatest English writers. He described real life. Michael Faraday ( ) - an English chemist and physicist, who discovered the connection between electricity and magnetism and produced the first dynamo.

Clothes Lots of ordinary clothes got their names thanks to people. Lord Cardigan led the Light Brigade in the Crimea in the war of 1853 – 56. The winters were very cold and Lord wore a warm woolen short coat which is now called a “cardigan”. Another British soldier, Wellington, gave his name to a pair of boots. They have a shorter name today – “wellies”.

Food A legend says that once there lived a man named Lord Sandwich. Once he didn’t have time to have dinner properly. So he asked to bring him some bread and sausage and made a new dish for himself – he put a slice of sausage between two slices of bread and ate it. So a sandwich appeared.

Geographical objects There are many different objects which are connected with definite people. They are rivers, mountains, lakes and cities. The capital of the USA is called Washington after the first President of the USA. The Hudson river in the USA got the name of the man who discovered it.

An unusual monument Mount Rushmore In South Dakota, USA, there is an interesting place to visit. It's a granite mountain. Four faces are carved on the mountain. They are the faces of four famous presidents. The presidents are Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson and Roosevelt. The construction of the monument began in 1925 and lasted till 1941 when the sculptor Gutzon Borglum died. Then his son finished the monument. These gigantic heads are eighteen meters (sixty feet) high. They are carved out of the granite of the mountain and are visible for over eighty kilometers. The monument is now an important place of interest which is visited by thousands every year. The name of this place is Mount Rushmore.
